Hi guys! I'm in desperate need of some help/advice!
I have a Canon 5d mkII which I love and has worked beautifully for years. However, last week I went to plug it in to the computer via the USB port (I like to remote shoot with it) and... nothing. The computer doesn't register that it is plugged in.
I tried several different cables and two different computers (both of which I've used previously for remote shooting with this camera). Everything's been restarted, and I even reinstalled the camera software on one of the computers to see if that would help. I don't even get a blip on the computers though.
Has anyone else had an experience like this? It really seems as though it's something wrong with the camera, and any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. :(

(I wasn't sure if I should post this in Q&A or Hardware & Software... but I figured Q&A was the better bet...)

Have you installed any new hardware or software since the last time it worked?

What computer/operating system are you using?

Though it sounds like a camera issue, if two computers are not seeing it.

No new installed hardware or software... one of the computers is running Windows XP and the other is on Snow Leopard. I'm not sure I have any options other than sending it in to have it looked at, but I was really hoping to avoid that. Wasn't sure if anyone else had encountered similar problems.

I got my 5D MkII about a year ago and, from the start, I could not get my computer to "see" it. I puttered around trying to fix it (not knowing what I was doing) but never could get it to work. My solution: I bought a cheap card reader that I use instead of hooking up direct to the camera. So, if you don't want to send in the camera you could consider this work-around. Good luck.

Have you tried a hard reset of the camera?

Turn camera off
Remove the main and backup batteries.
Turn camera on (it won't come on)
Press shutter (shutter won't fire) these two steps are to drain any remaining power left after removing the batteries.
Turn camera off
Replace both batteries. My be time for a new backup battery by the way.
Try camera again...

The goal is to shoot tethered, Mark.

Thanks for that. That's something I've never tried. I will take another run at hooking mine up.

Just take your camera or laptop or both to Best Buy or Micro Center.
And try it out on their.
Most of their laptops are running on Window 7 or 8.
Or those pawn shops that have used Window XP laptops.

They should have no problem in letting you load up their laptop with your Canon EOS Utility.

All you have to say, "If it works, then I will buy it."

Change the battery is they are over two years old.

I shoot everything wirelessly to a computer with the ATG AK1 Un-Tethered Systems that I purchased from Alzo Digitals' friends.

This is better than using Canon WFT because it is compatible with many cameras.
Has dual live-views and wireless radio flash.
