I had a very small wedding on a lake in Maine, we hired a pro-photog to shoot the wedding and the best shot the
one we have hanging on the wall was one my sister took.

OK, I've never "shot a wedding" but I took some pictures at my cousin's in 2002 with my 2MP Olympus P&S):

and then, there's the other approach:
At our wedding, there were 12 people.
We assembled in the minister's chambers, exchanged vows,
and walked to a nearby restaurant where we had engaged a
private dining room for our wedding dinner.
No photography, no fancy dress or cake. Just family and
a few special friends.
I remember that day as if it was yesterday...and the date
was 1960. |

getting vows rewed this summer, the dress is $60 and i'm spending much, much more on a photoshoot. and screw the cake, no one eats it anyway. |
Sadly, this sounds somewhat familiar to me as well. Although the dress is still hanging on a hook downstairs, not likely to ever see the light of day again. |

that's why ours is in a landfill. she waited too long to get it cleaned and preserved after and it was taking up too much space. |

Hmmm ... I can appreciate this approach, but it's still nice to have some photos to hand down to your children some day - no? |

As you say, this is just one approach.
I guess we figured that the (hypothetical) children could make their own memories.

It's just a sign of the times...
5 years ago the bridal show I do every january had 4 photogs, one also did video, 270 brides signed up.
this year just 90 brides signed up...and there were 9 vendors offering photography...and every single one of them also offered something else- photobooths, DJ, video, or sometimes all of that.
I added a photobooth 4 years ago when they were selling for $1500..now $600 is the going rate. and they're not as popular as they once were.
I've added DJ as well - i got the gear off a friend that dropped dJ to get into wedding photography. He figured weddings paid more (as in provided more hours of work per booking). I figured I have the connections in the industry.
As for making it work, personnel wise, not to hard really. I have a guy that I can hire as DJ and a girl and a guy I can hire to photo. I can do either, or as in the case of a 3/14 wedding I'll do both.
for the 3/14 wedding it's at an art gallery. A string quartet is providing ceremony music and 'cocktail hour' music, if you can call it cocktails. After the formal pics are done my ass't will continue to photograph and I'll take over the DJ part of the evening.
The sad truth these days is pro photography is a lot like printed encyclopedias or video rental stores- it's dying. The attendance at the bridal shows, the response/booking rate (for me an other photogs) is obvious. It's not the part timer, newbie, cheapie that's necessarily taking the biz. There just is no biz to be taken.
I've got more DJ-only weddings booked this year than photo gigs, followed by photobooth gigs. |

Excellent input! Add to all that the ubiquitous phone and tablet cameras, a leaning towards more informal/"real" photos, and it's easy to see why anyone previously specializing in formal photography has to diversify. Many people are skipping that part altogether, as they believe they can get all the photos they need from wedding attendees. And they're probably right ;) |

It's certainly a worry as who knows what technology will be about in a few years. I'm thinking of branching out into videography this year just to add another string to my bow and I quite fancy trying my hand at filmaking. I'd DJ as well as long as I could use my own music which I doubt would go down well. |
