i'm getting 4.7
many comments about my picture saying it has nothing to do with poverty or off topic...

I messaged one of them and told him the connection between powerty and my picture, he still did not get it.

I think I have to buy a saw to open up some minds.

Judging by my score and comments, it seems that everyone has become addicted to the super-clean anaesthetic that is NeatImage. Ah well, I am but an island in a sea of evenly smoothed pixels.

What is poverty to one...may not be poverty to another.
Im from the midwest. I've lived in the midwest my entire life. The only forms of poverty I've ever seen is the kind in the midwest. I really havent even seen "Big City" poverty before. When I was a kid..we did our new clothes shopping for school at K-Mart (once a year).
Now that Im grown up, we can aford more. I live in a larger city than when I was growing up, a more respected city. So I dont see the Poverty that many of you shown in some of your pictures in this challenge.
But for this challenge I went out searching for poverty in the Large City that we live close to. What I found was disturbing. Yes, there is a poverish community, but the people that live there all wear nice clothing and carry the top of the line cell phones. Im not saying that All less fortunate people in our area have these things, but what I am saying, is that I choose for my picture to artisticaly get this idea across. Now, I will get very low scores because my picture aparently doesnt show enough poverty.
Im sorry that I didnt grow up in a third world country. But I shouldnt get such a low score because of it.

Admitting the problem is the first step toward recovery.

People should sometimes take time to look at a picture to see it's realtion to the topic. A picture can express a feeling in a deeper and with more insightful way. Take time to try to see what the picture is trying to say, don't just take a glimpse to see if there's a little child or an old begger, and then rate the picture down for not relating to the topic if things are not included. This is more about a feeling than a litteral expression.

it's about effective communication.. an artist communicates their thoughts. Not to say you've failed - but in an anonymous challenge where no one knows the artist or intentions, it's an entirely different thing than if they came to a show you were having and could read what each photo was about or could have you explain it.

the same photo that does bad here might kill in an exhibit.

Did youhappen to see an episode of wifeswap on TV? It is AMAZING the different home life and upbringing people have, and the different pre conceived notions of poverty or anything else for that matter.

I know people for whom having a car more than 3 years old is poverty, and others who have never had a car and don't care. These folks aren't going to see a photo the same way, and nothing except maybe a life changing experience will alter their perspective.

Comments on my pic lean more toward the 'not poor enough' but some folks like it. There are places in this country (US) that running water and indoor plumbing are not common. Hard to show that is a photo.

My score is still bad, but I have 17 comments...the most ever!

But, the campaign against the Finepix boys/girls seems to be going on.

Are we a threat to world stability? Are we the anarchists of DPC?

Who cares! We just do what we do, and are proud to do it!

Never fear...once I get a new digital camera and start getting used to her and posting them in here...I will be the new guy at the bottom of the heap and automatically raise your quality and scores a factor or two...LOL

I was thinking DSLR is not going to be too different from 35mm SLR...but from some other reaing I think I am for a shock until I get used to the nuances. I have thick skin and know how to listen so all the comments will be appreciated. If I had thicker skin I would start with my cheap Sony FD71 but it takes one whole disk for one high quality (relatively speaking on this camera) shot...LOL. Man, I miss my Canon A-1 and F-1 more and more all the time. Wonder if the wife will let me steal her Canon Sureshot haha

Votes to my image is not so bad. My average score is about 6.1. But i have only 8 comments. Today i have visited site to read new comments several times but all day only one comment has reached to me...Something strange, may be my camera or my country couse this situation... I don't know.

I went through and tried to comment and vote on some but stopped after a while. I see that the challenge was poverty but many of the pics did not depict that to me. I try to look at photographs and ignore the captions first for a while...and then if I still do not have a clue what they are trying to convey I will read the captions. Everyone has different ideas of poverty... I have seen very happy, very healthy and very educated persons come from meager means without a single regret. I dont consider that poverty really even if it was below the national average...but they had food to eat, were healthy and not riddled with disease or malnourished but managed to squeak out a nice existence on their paltry earning.
The ones that struck me the most were the older people, the soup kitchen, the homeless on the street.

Is the intent of these challenges to meet the TOPICAL idea primarily with additional input on technique and mechanics of the shots... or is it all technique and mechanics with a general slant toward the topic? I took it as topical with comments on lighting, framing, composition, depth of field, focus, etc as secondary but still important to a clear and pleasing artistic sequence.
I would like some comments on how you more experienced voters rationalize the entries...

Thanks..

Yeah, go team Fujifilm! One day, we'll be the dominant force, no matter what others say.
