Greetings all you masters of the digital age. I am not a pro or even a rank amateur but a good friend told me about this site so I decided to join thereby improving my grade Z techniques. I have submitted two photos so far and on both of them I see the phrases, "too small" or "out of focus." These may seem like silly questions but...

1. When someone says a pic is too small, are they refering to the number of kbs or the number of pixels?

2. How can I tell if the pic is out of focus? I have looked at the pic on the display on my camera and it looks like it is in focus, so I must be missing something here.

Once again, thanks to all for your comments. JG :)

Welcome to the site, probablly what they are saying when the pic is too small, is the image size (standard size allowed is 640x480 or 480x640 or something like that)not the file size in Kb.

Once the voting is over for your pics in the challenge you can post them to the forum and ask for some advice on your pics...some people can be harsh on here but PLEASE take it with a grain of salt and DO NOT take it personally. And remember the typed words do not always represent the true tone of the person typing the message....Sometimes harsh comments will help you better your images.....

Most of the time people are indeed referring to the physical size of the photo. Like jab119 said, it is really to your benefit to use the largest size you can here.

Using the largest allowable Kb size is also something you should definitely try to do. Some folks submit images that are in the 30K range, and they'll definitely suffer in the vote because they'll look significantly worse than if they were closer to the 150K that's allowed here.

Good luck!

It used to be the case on this site that a photo had to be 640x480, 480x640, 640x427 or 427x640 and no other sizes were allowed. Now, though, that rule has been relaxed and you can submit at any size, as long as the longest side is no longer than 640 (and I think there's a minimum length, but I've never paid attention to that).

Most of the time I think it's best to use the biggest size you can with your preferred crop. That means making your longest side 640 pixels. However, I've seen a few photos that seem to be (or approach) 640x640, and that doesn't work in my opinion. It's too hard to process something that size.

So my advice is to go for the whole 640 if you can, but if your photo is square, or approaching it, scale it down a little.

As to focus, never trust the LCD screen on your camera EVER. It's completely misleading. You can only use it for composition, not to judge exposures or focus. Always take more photos than you think you need to, in case you haven't gotten the exposure or focus right in the first few. Try different settings even if you think you don't have to. It's what all the bigshots say, and it's good advice :).

One question that does need to be asked is what resolution do you have your monitor set to: 1024x768, 800x600 ? because it will make a difference to the size you perceive the picture to be.

Of course it is possible to go too far the other way. On my 1024x768 monitor, a picture 640 pixels high does not fit within the internet explorer window and I have to scroll to see it all.

Perhaps we could have a poll to find out what the most common resolution setting is.

When you look at your picture on the LCD screen of your camera it looks like it's in focus because your LCD is so small. Once you upload the image to your computer and open it up, you can see if it's in focus or not. Hope this helped.
