Hi. Since the powers that be are policing any “1’s†what score do we give a DNMC? |

In the mood for a hot thread are you?! :-)
Art is subjective, so is rating / voting on a challenge entry. Vote as you see fit and most importantly, be consistent.
... now, where is my popcorn eating gif? |

Just to put in my two cents. I strongly recommend against one's for does not meet challenge.I just received a comment of DNMC for a challenge in which the entry is the poster child for meeting the challenge. When voting on other challenges, I've also missed some glaringly obvious ties to the challenge topic. So giving the lowest possible vote to something that I might be missing seems overly harsh. I'll knock it down, but I don't call it the worst photo possible.
Just a thought

We aren't "policing any 1's", far from it. a 1 is a valid vote, just like a 10. What we DO look for is individuals giving out masses o 1s in a given challenge, or for that matter masses of 10's as well. I'm not sure we've ever identified anyone who gave 23 6's in a 30-image challenge or anything like that... |

It is common that the relevance to a challenge doesn't hit the viewer. My wife once entered a photo of a sub-hunter aircraft in a challenge topic of "The sentinel". The challlenge was filled with lone trees on hilltops, but her picture got a few DNMC type comments because people didn't know what this plane did and how it met the topic.
There are still times when I don't see any connection to the topic and I try to remember to leave a comment saying so. I do give a lower vote for failing to meet the topic, but not a 1. |

if you DNMC creatively you'll get extra points from me. If you meet the challenge creatively you'll also get extra points. if you take a photo creatively I'll give you points for that. If you title it creatively, points for that.
If you do any of the above dully, uninspiredly, unoriginally, or formulaically, I might dock you points. |

Jim (and Bob) - I hid the last two posts. Really don't want to be discussing what constitutes a valid or DNMC image while the challenge is actively in voting. Thanks.
Jim - Wasn't being snarky. Generally (and you can look them up from over the years) a forum thread that discusses handing out 1 votes and the subject of DNMC, well ... it doesn't take long for it to go off the rails. |

... and there's probably a good chance not that this will come up, so I'll just throw it in early.
From the Help/Site Rules/Forum Rules menu ...
Item #2
Please do not discuss specific challenge entries or outtakes until voting has ended. Doing so can affect voting and commenting, so please save these discussions for after the end of the voting period. Please report any posts discussing these, and do not reply to them. Outtake threads posted early will be removed. |

This little video, which I just happened upon, struck me as oddly relevant to this discussion.

Back in my day, I would just write 'em up and move on.
And if they gave me any trouble in the forums, I'd rough 'em up while repeatedly yelling "Stop resisting!"
That said, if I do vote these days, I am replete with benefits of the doubt. |

You know, I never quite thought about our relationship to art this way. What a striking little video. Thanks so much for sharing :-) |

Feel's like we have been slapping this topic about for many years.
I have a proposal- there is a button you can hit that DNMC's a photo, and a hand comes through the computer and slaps the entrant like Chris Rock. Lets call it the Will Smith Button. You can hit it, but if an appeal is taken and a consensus of certain random challenge entries disagree, you are suspended a years and have to star in GI Jane2.

Now, THAT's a constructive suggestion! :-) Maybe when intel comes out with a VR Chip and we all upgrade we can implement that? |
