Thanks for posting the pictures. There are a lot of great shots. I'm glad you guys had decent weather. It was raining in Orange County yesterday afternoon.

I'll be posting some pictures within the next day or two - but I'm going to cheat first and try editing them first =p.. (my lack of knowledge about exposure really showed when I loaded them all onto the computer, so I hope some editing will help).
Guess I might actually read Understanding Exposure, which I bought awhile back (this is the link to the newer version, which I don't have). I hear it's supposed to be great for learning about exposure.

Posted some of my shots here:
//pbuzz.com/showalbum.php?aid=1193&uuid=1024 - you can view them in an automatic slideshow by clicking on "start slide-show" at the album - or just browse, if you prefer.
Some (as you will surely notice) have been heavily edited. Definitely let me know if you can think of any improvements (even if it's just that I overkilled the saturation in some shots, something is too dark, a better crop, etc). Couple things I wish I had done - 1. known more about exposure prior to the trip. 2. paid more attention to the reflections in some of the shots.
these are most of my shots - i left a few out, but most of my day was just spent shooting the same things over and over with different settings =X
i looked through both of your albums, and they're great! maybe i can catch some better ones next time. i look forward to future outings - i enjoyed this last one :)
i think a lot of mine have an artificial feel to them - maybe because i saw what they originally looked like. let me know!

Brian, you've got a good eye for shots. From what I could tell via a cursory glance, your shots do not look artificial. Granted I'm just waking up but they looked fine. You have some really nice work so don't sell yourself short on your abilities! :)
By the way, I also have a 717 and I can bring it next time in addition to my 10D and I can try to answer any questions you might have. In fact, my two highest scoring shots (both 86th percentile) were taken with the 717 and I have yet to top them with my 10D. The highest I've managed with the 10D is 69th percentile. Look forward to meeting you in January!

Thanks Zippy! We had excellent weather, no rain or heavy clouds.. just some clouds over the ocean. It was a beautiful day! You should come up and join us sometime!!!

It's hard to tell what you heavily edited because i do not know your camera or it's limits. You photos are awesome. I love your "Off in the Bushes". You should really consider selling that one on DPCprints! You would need to level the horizon line though and maybe lighten the lower right corner a bit.
Your ""couldn't figure out a good crop, so just left the size as is" is perfect. Don't crop it! It's so clear. I love Carl Zeiss! I wish I had one of his lenses on my camera. I have a sony handcam (digivideo camera). I love the clarity of the lens :)
"i think i increased saturation a bit too much on this one - let me know what you think. it looked good when i did it, but when i came back and looked later it seemed a bit much - changed it slightly, and now i'm unsure." is perfect for saturation. I love highly saturated photos though. I would grab some orange in PS with the color selector and lower the opacity to 10% and paint over the sunglare on the sand a little to tone it down and remove all white from it. :)

Great shots Arie! Your bird shots came out great.
I have posted a link to my photos from out trip HERE
Enjoy. |
I love how you threw brian's pic in with us for the group shot! Nice!!!
I love the golden color in the photo of me. i look a little plastic though. Did you do that or do I really look like that?
great photo of doug. It almost looks like you desaturated it a bit. very nice!
Your colors and clarity are brilliant. I wish I could get those colors and clarity. Is that due to your ND filter and some good lenses? Great job eric!!!!

i'm still pretty inexperienced with photoshop - all my editing knowledge basically comes from precise instructions i've taken from sites like this (ie: the tutorials). therefore, i'm not really sure how to select the orange in the color selector to decrease the opacity, nor paint over the white part (do you mean clone?). maybe if you could provide some brief instructions - i'm usually decent with figuring things out once I have a few guidelines/landmarks to follow

Arie and Eric...I will try to post either tonight or tommorrow. I just actually downloaded the images today. It's been crazy at work. I will submit untouched since I do not really know how to edit my photos. |

Arie and Eric.............your photos are incredible. The colors on your pics are amazing. My photos are sooooooo dull, that it looks like we were shooting at different locations. I need some serious polarizing lessons. Eric, how did you get your skies to look sooooooo blue and your clouds to have such a dramatic effect. |

Doug,
The Polarizer filter definitely helps with the blue sky.
In photo shop I adjusted the levels and saturation a bit and also used the "Burn" tool on the clouds to make them a bit more dramatic.

Hi Arie,
The photo of Doug and the desaturated look is little technique I came up with in photshop. I'm glad you like it.
I run most of my photos after I download them to my computer threw a photoshop action that I created. In the action is a basic contrast curve, levels and also runs it threw another photoshop plug-in called "Grain surgeryĆ¢ which removes grain and small artifacts from images. In the case of the photo of you, it looks like the setting was to high and made your face look the way it does. I can repost if you would like.
The ND filter will ad some contrast but not affect the color. I just did some simple adjustments in photoshop.
