I know that people have been less and less inclined to comment because some backlash they've received in the past.

I know that a few people don't want constructive criticism, because they've made the decisions that were right for them, and they're happy with it.

I want to thank the people who are brave and take the time to make suggestions and critical comments. I am a much better photographer because of them.

It's such a huge thing that I remember a comment from 15 years ago. (holy crap!! I've been on this site for 15 years?!?)

Andrewt made a comment on this image: . It simply said "I feel that you could have done more with this image. A lot of potential here, 6". I had done all I thought I could do, and had worked on it quite a bit. So I was a little irritated at first. But then I reached out to him to ask him what he had in mind. That began a marvelous journey of discovery.

15 years later, I received a recent comment from mariuca that included "- The rolling pin is too much of a distraction. I'd keep onions and egg shells only on the beautifully floured table
- keep the story simple" It was a photo that I had been struggling with quite a bit. I knew from the beginning that the rolling pin was too large (didn't have one of the tiny ones that would have been perfect.) I kept trying to crop part of it. It's a photo I need for a show, and even though it isn't very good, I kept working at it and removed the rolling pin, etc.

I get comments that I completely disagree with. I read them, take them in, and then decide that it isn't for me. But it still gives me information into what people think.

But I am extremely grateful that people take the time to do it. I used to do it a lot, because it helped me learn what I liked, what worked, what didn't. I stopped doing it because it seemed like it might not be wanted or appreciated. I am going to start doing it again. Because if it even makes a difference to one person, it is worth it.

I would not be the photographer I am today without people taking the time to give me feedback.

THANK YOU!

Well said! ... and a great idea.

Just for the fun of it (one of my favorite "comments"). :-D

The first couple of years I was here, I made a LOT of comments with constructive criticisms. It wasn't as much for them as it was for me. I made myself comment on the midrange votes I left. The entries that weren't great but didn't suck either. The extremes are always easy to comment on. But those in the middle made me consider what did and didn't work about it, and that improved my own photography.

Other than Grog comments, most of the constructive comments I leave now are where the photo appeals to me, but there is a flaw that ruins it for me, such as a slightly skewed horizon.

I̢۪m going to go back and try and comment on the free study. I just commented on my nines, and I̢۪m gonna work my way through. Trying to come up with what I would consider changing in order to improve the picture. Feel free to disagree. It̢۪s just an observation and a thought.

oops, ran out of time. Got through my 9s, 5s and a chunk of 6s

Tip of the hat to you Wendy.
The reason of leaving comments for you is that I recognize as yours the wonderful series of black cats. I love them so much that I had to write a line. Not only a congratulatory one but a constructive one, according to my mind.

I start to mimic the way of most colleagues here leave nice comments only AFTER the results are in. A pity. But I assume that nobody wants comments anymore and it is more distinguished to congratulate only the winners (grin).

I assume that some of us read book or film or art reviews or critics. Why not continuing here an occasional comment?

(On a side note, a beaten path here but wouldn't it be interesting to know why some people leave very low marks? One needs to have guts to do so)
