Challenge is Expert editing. May we do everything that would normally and currently be acceptable under current rules? IOW can we add text? Create a composite of two or more photos? Use software editing tools extensively?
I ask because the way the description is written, it sounds as if the only "text" would be in your title and not on the image itself. And that is indeed the case for Billboard I entries.
(I actually don't know what billboards now-a-days look like . . . I don't see many and don't pay much attention to them when I do. Maybe my question is stupid and there's never any text on the billboard itself??)
And what about using actual products, companies, slogans? Is that allowed?

Yes. That includes text on the image (except for any text that would identify the photographer, i.e. copyright / watermark, etc.).
Have fun, and good luck! |

So the probable reason that there was no text in any of the Billboard I entries and that the description ends with "Title your entry with what the billboard would be promoting" is that text was not allowed, even in Expert/Extended, back in the day? |

I wasn't sure about that aspect either, but it sounded like text is fine, as that is an element of most billboards. |

Ironically Text is probably the biggest and most prevalent element on most billboards |

Last time Billboard ran was in 2005 and was under the Advanced Editing rules. So, yeah, text wouldn't have been allowed on the entry - needed the title to drive it. Probably should have taken that out of the description for this time around.
If you want your brain to hurt, look up the old Advanced Editing IV ruleset!!! |

Far be it from me to know anything, but it appears that this challenge is a visual photo challenge of a photo that would appear on a billboard and that could be mixed with other things but it is not a challenge to make a billboard in its entirety including text and slogans and such. However, what could be wrong with taking a picture of something that already has a slogan or text on it and the answer is nothing.
That seems to be the spirit of this challenge and if it were otherwise it would just say create a billboard in its entirety and not have the part about titling your entry the title of the Billboard.

If it was just to take a photo and post in the correct ratio, there'd be no need for this to run under Extended editing rules.
That's my take on it. I had no hand in posting this challenge FWIW.
This thread is starting to remind me of why challenge descriptions started fading away, to be replaced with N/A. :-D |

have you changed the challenge description .. ?? ..
because this is how it stands now ..
"Take a photograph that might grace a highway billboard (those large signs you see on the side of the road). Your submission should be in landscape orientation, and should be twice as wide as it is tall to simulate a common billboard aspect ratio. Title your entry with what the billboard would be promoting."
my first reaction was .. ok .. we need to create a billboard .. which would include writing because they are delivering a message .. on the actual billboard not just in the title .. and because of the extended editing rules we could do what we would usually be allowed to do to our photo .. or photos ..
here's some info that ppl might find helpful about billboards ..
"What is the purpose of a billboard?
Billboard advertisements are designed to catch a person's attention and create a memorable impression very quickly, leaving the reader thinking about the advertisement after they have driven past it. They have to be readable in a very short time because they are usually read while being passed at high speeds." .. the high speeds is not a given though .. thats just what google said .. ;)

In this particular iteration of the Billboard challenge, anything valid under extended editing rules is acceptable, including text. It's mildly unfortunate that we neglected to modify the challenge description from the previous iteration, but FWIW I can imagine a billboard with NO text being effective, such as (for example A scene of a car crash, close up, with beer cans spilling out of the car) and the title "Billboard for MADD"... |

This is the challenge. IF text was necessary, or preferred, there would be no nee for the statement "title your entry with what the Billboard would be promoting."
THe extended editing is still vaild under the make a cool picture or illustration with photos- not in a "we must include text and make it look like a real billboard" kind of way.
Be free, do what you want, but don't ignore the challenge description and logic. |

It's already been determined that you can use text for this challenge, just like ANY Extended editing challenge.
Either the entries will have text, or they won't - EITHER way is fine. What's the issue here?
When this is all said and done, I can't wait to see what you've entered. :-)
