I'm glad that I fooled someone into thinking that it was real. I wanted to do this type of shot, and I finally tried it.
I had gotten a fun little toy for Christmas -- A 3d printed, light up moon.
3d moon light
Jeff told me after the fact, that I had it rotated the wrong way -- you couldn't see the man in the moon
The setup is a black background -- hung the moon (I can change the moon's color, but I couldn't get it to be yellow that night, so I changed the color in photoshop).
Then I had a strobe up and behind the moon to make the light on the cat. Because to get the light on the moon to show the textures, it wouldn't be bright enough to actually light the cat.
Had to hood the strobe so it didn't spill too much light on the background.

Sounds like some time was put into getting that setup.
My biggest question, is how do you get the cat to look in the direction you want. There's probably some fun in that (a soundtrack would be fun!). :-)
Thanks for sharing this. |

I tried toys, strings, etc. But what worked was Swiss cheese (didn't consider the appropriateness of it, consider it's the moon!!!) For some reason, Cleopatra is absolutely crazy about swiss cheese. The problem is, she's young, so she immediately jumps at the cheese instead of sitting patiently. So it was rather difficult. :) |

Cleopatra? That was the name of our family Collie when I was in High School: Cleo for short, Campbell's Crest Cleopatra of Savoy in the AKC registry :-) |
