I used two photos from the same shoot for Free Study and Extended Free Study, one in colour and one in sepia.

Although both met the rules for Free Study, the EFS entry did quite a bit better. Why? Was it the composition or am I just bad at colour?

EFS has better flow and composition IMO. Whether intentional or not, it used the Golden Ratio and has better breathing space. Additionally, the Sepia tone allows the viewer to concentrate on the subjects (people) where the color overwhelms the visual senses (where to look first, etc.). That's my take.

Thanks Barry. I've never really understood the Golden Ratio. I shouldn't have cropped my Free Study entry so tight though. And clearly I should stay away from colour.

The EFS entry also has a stronger triangle.

And no, you shouldn't avoid color, it's just another tool that to need to learn to use.

You can't just look at them and see that one of them is better than the other? Maybe you have preconceptions about candid photos. Surely you could look at two still lifes and see which one is composed better and uses color better? Do you not think those things apply to candids?
