Looks like this is all the rage now with around 4,000 entries for each challenge. Could this be part of the reason that the amount of participants on DPC has dwindled so dramatically in recent years? Are any of our members here also part of this AI Art Challenge thing? https://creator.nightcafe.studio/challenges

No. Too recent a thing.

The novelty of digital photography is well over, most of the current participants on DPC have been around for years. I learned a lot when I first started in 2010 but recently there is very little to learn as the site is not very active and I am no longer trying to learn something new about photography. I started learning about videography instead. I also looked at the latest trends in AI (Alessandro's recent post), it is very interesting but I am not an artist so it is not for me.

Yes, PH, to produce a good AI image you need to be an artist. I checked the link and browsed through AI images, some are very good. Dismissing a whole new trend seems to me to be short-sighted.

None of this changes the fact that we're mostly here because we WANT to be "photographers". Just sayin'...

Nothing wrong with that :)

But where it would get you in foreseeable future?

I'm old-school. I'm a curmudgeon. I don't need to "get" anywhere, I got there long ago. I'm not personally very interested in trying "new things" just because I can. I like to fiddle around with nice, simple "photography". I'm not "marketing" myself, did that for decades. I do take mild umbrage at any implication that this is somehow not "good enough" or whatever. It's enough that I and a few others keep this place going as best we can under straitened circumstances. That's what I think anyway.

Basically, it’s just fun! Finding or composing a photograph is like a treasure hunt. You never know what you are going to come up with. It’s stimulating to be challenged.

I know, that's also the case of 1x.com, for now, AI is explicitly forbidden. While it's fair enough to be strictly a photographic site, 1x is now desperate to stay in business. I just found one of my images for sale at Walmart!! It was resold by third parties sourcing images from 1x.

My image at Walmart:

At 1x:

Sad times but 1x needs a new business model, the old one is gone.

But this is also a problem when you have a specific vision for the image you are trying to get. I got very frustrated so fun was short-lived for me ;)

PS I still think that the "curmudgeon" needs to rethink the challenges and open the door slightly once in a blue moon. Maybe it could make this tiny group a bit bigger and bring a breath of fresh air.
(I am done now on this subject)

Looking at your work I'd say you definitely are an artist. Maybe not one who can wield a paintbrush or pencils but one who can wield a camera and who can visualise and use what is in front of your eyes and capture that and convey the feelings and emotions that the scene evoked within you in such a way that you can share it with your audience and make them participate and enjoy it in the same way that you did. Same thing goes for creating art with AI. You just don't need a camera but a way to convey your feelings and emotions into images and for that you only need a way with words as it's all text based. That in itself is also an art, the art of writing and expressing and projecting your thoughts, emotions, fantasies and visions into your writing and then seeing it come to life through AI. And if it doesn't quite come out the way you visualised it then you can tweak it by changing certain words and sentences just like you tweak a photograph during editing until it becomes what you wanted it to be. The 3D animated art is also something else...quite awesome...have a look at an example here: Just give it a half a minute or so to for the animation to kick in. https://creator.nightcafe.studio/creation/qFyfWS4CwnU18OCybTJ4

I have no feelings or emotions when take photos, I just try to come up with a composition that I like, more a technical approach than artistic.

It is not all text based, you can also upload an image as a reference:
Kling AI

Impressive animation but I don't quite like this style. I assume it starts as a 2D AI image and not a 3D mesh?

PH? Are you talking to me? All I said was that an AI Challenge site is not the reason for DPC's demise.

Yip you are right that's why I'm here too...coz i'm a wannabee hahahaha lol...one of my favo songs from the time i was just a kid with lots of dreams and fantasies
I somehow got the lyrics to the song wrong at that time and always sang it to myself with the 3 lines just below here.
It was only many years later that I actually discovered the actual lyrics. Still love the song though even today :)

I wanna be an octopi,
in an octopus's garden
down by the sea

https://www.youtube.com/shorts/X8XqZ7qBKvs

"Octopus's Garden" Song by the Beatles.

I'd like to be under the sea
In an octopus's garden in the shade
He'd let us in, knows where we've been
In his octopus's garden in the shade

I'd ask my friends to come and see
An octopus's garden with me

I'd like to be under the sea
In an octopus's garden in the shade

We would be warm (ooh) below the storm (ooh)
In our little hideaway beneath the waves (ah)
Resting our head (ooh) on the sea bed (ooh)
In an octopus's garden near a cave (ah)

We would sing and dance around
Because we know we can't be found

I'd like to be under the sea
In an octopus's garden in the shade

We would shout (ah) and swim about (ooh)
The coral that lies beneath the waves (lies beneath the ocean waves)
Oh, what joy (ah) for every girl and boy (ooh)
Knowing they're happy and they're safe (happy and we're safe)

We would be so happy, you and me
No one there to tell us what to do

I'd like to be (ah) under the sea
In an octopus's garden with you
In an octopus's garden with you
In an octopus's garden with you
