I notice that lately every one of my entries looses quite a lot of sharpness compared to the original when viewed here on DPC.
It's sharp on my desktop but once uploaded and viewed on DPC it looses a lot of sharpness. All the lovely fine details are gone.
Did a little experiment...I dragged my entry of the DPC screen back to my desktop with my mouse and then when viewed on my desktop
it has become nice and sharp and detailed again. So i'ts definitely something that the DPC website is doing to my image.

Could it be a general browser issue? What if you open the locally saved image with your browser by typing the path directly in the URL box?
I checked mine and don't have this issue. I am using a 4500x3000 resolution monitor with 200% scaling in the system settings. Browser (Windows Edge) set at 100% scaling.
Your Irving Penn entry looks sharp but a bit grainy , so does your 2024-10 free study entry. Some others (like sweet Mary Jane) look clear and sharp.

Fred - If you're talking about the 'preview' that you can look at after uploading a challenge entry, that is always a tad soft. There's some resizing code attached to that and it never really shows the crisp end result. Always has bugged me. Once in voting it's fine, and after results as well. |

Aha! that must be it then because indeed all my entries in voting and the ones in my portfolio from past challenges do look nice and sharp. So whatever it is that makes my images look softer in preview prior to voting is something I must have missed before. Thanks for your input also Willem but it seems then that the issue is as glad2badad has experienced it also. |

That's interesting....
Every time after looking at the preview I am tempted to sharpen my entry subsequently - sometimes I did. And after rollover I wondered why my picture is so oversharpened.
I also saw many oversharpened pictures from other members, this gives me a clue why this might be the case |

I have certainly done this myself with the same result. At least now I know why and I'll be less likely to fall into that trap again. |

You just have to trust the way the image looks when finished processing (on your computer / phone) prior to uploading here. |

Well holy cow. Been fighting this for a LONG time. Never realized there was a material difference. |

Well I checked and my entry in the Extended Free Study which opened for voting today is still as unsharp as before voting. This is very disconcerting. There is something not right with the way DPC displays entries.
Postnote..well whadda ya know....logged in and out a few times and went and had another look and now it's suddenly nice and sharp like it's meant to be. 👌👍 😎
Uh oh looks like I spoke too soon....Just logged in again and now it's back to the unsharp blurry version again...what the heck is going on with the algorism of the DPC website?
OK here is what is going on...when I am logged in and on the DPC Home page and I click on my entry in the "MY SUBMISSIONS" box on the lefthand side of the screen then my image looks sharp and the way it's meant to be. Now as soon as I click on the Challenges Needing Your Votes "Extended Free Study" from the DPC Homepage and then click on my entry it looks unsharp and blurry. And if I go to my profile page and click on my entry under the Challenge Entries then it also comes up unsharp and blurry. Then I logged out and then clicked on the Challenges Needing Your Votes "Extended Free Study" from the DPC Home page and then clicked on my entry and it still looks unsharp and blurry.
So the voters obviously also see my image as blurry and unsharp. This is very disconcerting. There is definitely some problem with the DPC algorism.
So my image only shows properly sharp and detailed when I view it from the "MY SUBMISSIONS" window on the DPC Home page when logged in.
UPDATE: No it is not a DPC Site issue...It is a browser issue. It happens when I use the Chrome browser on my Apple Mac. But as soon as I switch to Safari browser the issue is gone and everything shows the way it should. And strangely it only affects my own entries because when I look at other peoples entries on the Chrome browser they are all perfectly sharp just as they are when I use Safari browser. Maybe someone tech savvy has an explanation for me as to why this is happening and what settings on my Chrome browser might be responsible for this.

Potentially the cache.
Hold down your left shift key and click that reload circle next to the URL bar a few times. See if that helps. Should force load the page from fresh data.

Hi Cory ok I tried that but it makes no difference
And another strange thing that never happened before and I just noticed now is that when I log in with either Safari or Chrome browser and view anybodies entry on completed challenges I can see the statistics but I cannot see the voting breakdown but when I look at any of my own entries on completed challenges I can see both the statistics and the voting breakdown with both Safari and Chrome browser. Very strange as before I was always able to see the voting breakdown on everyone's completed challenge entries and my own on both Chrome and Safari browser. (The voting breakdown being the graph with the blue bars)
Another thought that just occurred to me...could it possibly have anything to do with my membership having expired?

Oh and now I cant'even vote anymore...when looking at any challenge in voting I am only able to give a comment but the voting facility has disappeared for me. That is on both the Safari and the Chrome browser. |

As far as I know now that your membership has expired, you can only vote on open challenges. |

That's right, for the record: only paid members vote on member challenges, including the Free Studies and virtually all of the "extra" challenges we occasionally run. |

But the issue remains that whilst in voting my image looks very unsharp and that means that voters also see my image as unsharp and that will cost me some points in score.
It is not only a little bit unsharp it's quite a lot. Almost like no sharpening was applied at all. I would love to find out what the reason for this could be and how it can be solved. When I compare the image in voting to the same image on my desktop the difference is like night and day.
