I've spent the last two days installing most of the software I need onto my new laptop.
Photoshop was working fine until I copied the Nik plug-ins into my plug-in folder but that caused all sorts of program errors including my being unable to save my work. As soon as I removed that folder, everything went back to normal.
Any suggestions about what's causing this. It worked fine on my old laptop, even when it kept crashing. |

Did you do a straight copy into a folder or did you use an installation program?
Which versions of Photoshop and Nik collection?
What did the errors say?

My Photoshop is the lastest but Nik is the free 2012 version. The installation program doesn't seem to work any more so for the last couple of years I've had to do a straight copy of the folder. It's never been a problem on my old computer.
I'm not sure exactly what the message is as I'm not at home but it tells me certain things can't be done because of a program error. |

The newest version of Photoshop apparently won't work with the older version of the NIK plugins; your installer either won't work with your current operating system or it "knows" it won't work with the current PS and thus "refuses" to install there. Backwards incompatibility is a common bug feature of software upgrades, which is one reason I avoid them whenever possible.
ETA: Sorry for your frustration, like I said I hate upgrades ...

So why was the same combination working on my old (only 4.5 years, but dying) computer?
Strangely I've managed to get hold of the previous version of Nik and was able to get that one to work. Sometimes technology can be really puzzling!
And now I'm on to my Topaz plug-ins. Most have been working okay, but for some reason the Topaz login refuses to acknowledge that I've deleted Photo AI from my old computer, so it's only working as a trial. I'll have to contact Topaz tomorrow and see if they can sort it out. |

With Topaz you should have an account with them, if you've purchased from them before. Login and go to your account (can't remember the exact page) and find your license info. Then plug that into the Topaz app/plugin that's fussing at you. |

I am logged in to Topaz. Everything is okay with most of my plug-ins but for some strange reason it insists that I've used my 2 available seats for Photo AI even though I've uninstalled it from my old computer. |

I seem to have solved the Topaz problem too. I had two different installations of Photo AI saved on my old computer and naturally I'd installed the latest one. When I uninstalled that and used one dated a few months earlier, it worked fine. It even let me do an update, but after that it said there was another update available - at a cost of over $80. I'll settle for the version I've got.
All the problems I've had are the reason that I hate getting new computers. I hope this one lasts a lot longer than my previous one did. |
