hey Steve ..
hope you're having a lovely Xmas break .. ;)

anyway .. i'm not sure how preventing ppl from changing their vote once they've made it would prevent the strategic voters .. or even look more carefully before voting ..

am I missing something .. :)

also .. the voting system worked fine back in the day when we had so many more ppl entering challenges and voting ..

now with so few ppl entering and voting one vote can make a huge difference to your end result ..

is it fair that one person/voter can have such an impact on your place in the challenge ..

I'd say no .. :(

Going back to the underlying issue first:

What is strategic voting and do you know that it is actually happening?

Is that lowering your own votes given when you see your own received average vote is low, just to increase the chance to end up higher?

Possible evidence of such behaviour could be that the average score gets lower at the end WITHOUT an increase in number of votes (although this could also be the result of people just reconsidering their scores for other reasons). If the average drops while number of votes increases then this is not evidence of that behaviour IMO. Then a voter that did not like your image or is more critical than the average voter waited till the end.

Thinking about this further, even if the average drops at the end on a single image, it is still no evidence. Only if averages drop on a significant number of images, without increase in number of votes, this could be evidence.

So do we know it is actually happening?

I think, if people act in this pathetic way and you are trying to prevent it by blocking changes to votes, it will not work. They would just vote low to start with.

Hiding the average might have some influence. It takes away an incentive, but people might still show the same behaviour if they see better images than their own in the challenges.

What might really help is to force people to achieve some kind of forced average in their votes (say between 5 and 6), which would mean it is more a ranking system than a rating system. That would require quite a change.

But it is only worth considering if there is clear evidence of strategic voting. Something probably only site admins could know if they are able to monitor averages and number of votes on all images over time.

Is it worth the effort? In my view, no. As Roz stated, with current low number of votes, each vote can have a significant influence. In my view it also means the final position in the challange becomes less meaningfull. Don't get hung up on the ranking. Just hope you get some useful experience out of it.

The one thing that I can think of but is not workable is if we do not vote in challenges we've entered in.

@ Willem.... Right, give people credit. Rise to the occasion and assume this is not a problem. Strategic voting cannot be proved nor is it really possible.
I've taken issue with people who don't vote when they enter or don't vote at all for some reason, but at this point ... whatever ... please don't discourage any kind of participation. There are too few entries, votes and comments as it is. If you want to open another thread call it "Please Vote" or "Please Enter, the more the merrier".

And Fred, if you wish to turn off your own voting graph I believe that can be done. But to do that globally would not be helpful IMO.
