Forgive me if it has been discussed but I cannot find any reference.
Looking at the rule set for extended challenges I see the following:
use any feature of image processing software to manipulate/enhance the images in your submission.
Which by my interpretation means its allowed.
An example might be ai may be used to change the clothes of a subject in a photograph which otherwise meets the challenge rules. However changing the building in the background from a house to a castle may be a step too far. |

Any images used need exit data. What you do to the images after is pretty wide open in Extended Editing. |

For a moment I was hoping that finally there is a change to DPC Extended and I will have an incentive to rejoin to play with some new ideas, not just AI.
What a pity that's not the case! Opportunity lost to unleash creativity and breathe new life to this site :( |

Sorry Margaret, Im not sure what you mean. What is new besides AI that you want to try? |

My project at Artstation:

These are more equivalent to "real estate" photography, just to show off what I built in 3D.
More aiming for artistic virtual photography are on my 1x portfolio:

Unfortunately I was accused of using AI to create these images so I left 1x although some of these images are still for sale at places like Walmart. |

PS Don't get me wrong, I think AI is great, it just needs to be clear that it is AI. 1x is a photography website so I would not post any AI-created image there unless it was expected. For me virtual photography is still a form of photography as I decide on a composition, add lighting and use a virtual camera with all the features of real cameras to take the pictures.

For me a minimum requirement to call something "photography" would be that photons are involved, i.e. you use light to record in an image. You might do all kinds of processing afterwards (although my personal preference is to minimize that) but you start with a picture recorded as result of light bouncing , spreading, etc and then being recorded. (think of the origin of the word itself)
If it is pure computer simulation, design, processing, either with or without AI, then to me this has nothing to do with photography. I am not against those technologies (I have worked in IT all my life) but I just would not call this photography. |

If I understand the subject correctly, we are talking about virtual photography with a virtual camera and virtual lights taking virtual photos in a virtual world where you would need real life photographic skills to make a successful image. I think I would rather enjoy assembling virtual camera/lighting equipment for a virtual shoot of virtual subjects. Whether there is room for this type of thing at DPC atm is another matter. |

Yes, it is all virtual ;) And yes, your "real" photography skills are very useful.
I honestly think that DPC needs to reinvent itself, I am not saying that AI and 3D are the only way to go but some change is needed.
