I just received an email telling me that from my next renewal in January my Photography plan will cost 75% (!!) more than what I have been paying so far. It is completely unacceptable for me and I am going to cancel the subscription.

Anyone else got this increase?

My understanding is this is only for monthly plans, annual plans are currently unaffected. Should this be the case , if you sign up for an annual plan before the increase date your payment will remain the same.

I was still on my Australian plan that I got many years ago, quote from the email I received:

"The price of the Photography plan (20GB) annual, billed monthly plan is changing from A$14.29/month to A$23.99/month on your next renewal date.

Your subscription will renew automatically on 27-January-2025 (PT), and your subscription will automatically renew annually until you cancel. Price subject to change at renewal."

These terms are unacceptable to me, I have already canceled. I don't do much photography these days and I never used Cloud Storage so it was relatively easy. I will look for an alternative application for occasional photo editing.

That is criminal !! I am still on Photoshop CS3 and Lightroom 3.6 local installation (old!) but was looking for an upgrade now with my new camera. Glad I did not go for an Adobe subscription.

Both Nikon and Sony offer now very good RAW processing software and although not as well streamlined and integrated as Adobe, they do the job for me. For real editing after that CS3 still is good enough for me.

I suggest looking at the latest Sony software since you have a Sony camera (a.o). Imaging Edge Desktop consists of a viewer, an editor and a remote controller.

Didn't realize Lightroom came with Photoshop ...

PSP has RAW file editing options, or just pickup Corel AfterShot Pro to go with it.
One time purchase. Done.

I hear Gimp has v3.0 available now too. :-P

Good luck.

Good luck.

I rarely used Photoshop, only for compositing, Lightroom had all I needed for selecting and editing photos. I used CorelDraw many years ago but I think Corel apps are now a bit outdated. Gimp is really a replacement for Photoshop, not for Lightroom.

Anyway, I will try to get used to Darktable, very powerful but has a rather steep learning curve. Any Darktable users at DPC??

You’re wrong about Corel, but that’s purely personal opinion. Like I said, good luck.

Yes, here's one.

I never had/used LR or Photoshop, so I have the advantage that I don't know what I might be have missed by relying entirely on Darktable and Gimp.

I do know that I saved a lot of money, though :-)

I did some tutorials on Darktable and find it still non-intuitive and difficult to establish the workflow I had in Lightroom. It has some impressive features but most of the modules I am unlikely to use ever.

I found that ON1 Photo RAW is similar to LR and easier to use with one off payment of around 70$ (usually on special). I am going to try it out first. Any users of ON1 Photo RAW?

I tried Darktable as well but find the scene referred workflow a waste of time.
With scene referred workflow every raw image starts very flat and unattractive and needs significant adjustment to get anywhere close to usable or close to the in-camera JPG.
I can understand that might be preferred if you want to get the most out of it for an individual large format print, but for the regular images I prefer to have a decent starting point.
I find myself more and more switching to use of the in-camera JPG nowadays.
For now I am using the standard software supplied by Nikon and Sony. Although less user friendly, less integrated, I can easily browse, rate and select images and then edit either raw or jpeg with that software. For most purposes that is good enough for me.

Thanks for the heads up. I bought mine through a third party as where I was located before Adobe did not sell its products directly. Mine is due on 20 March and it seems that will be a massive increase as well.

If that is the case it may also be the end for me even though I do like the PS/LR package A LOT, and I do not believe any others can replace it. It will not justify the cost for my needs and my current financial status.

I'll keep you posted. Thnx again

ON1 had another special and I just bought it outright for less than 50$ (CHF 50.83). I could start using it straight away, without any tutorials, it is similar to LR. It also has some features of Photoshop as it has layers. I understand that its RAW processing isn't as good as Adobe's but it is good enough for me. I am using it mainly for processing stills for timelapses (and occasional DPC entry ;)

I had a chat with Adobe and the raise is not that bad. Currently my plan is ~US$105/year and will go to ~$120/year. I guess the raise was due for some time.
02/05/2025 12:45:36 PM · #17
In your case it is a 14% increase, in my case it was 68%, quite a difference, I wonder why
02/05/2025 01:25:40 PM · #18
This is if I pay 1 year in one go. Otherwise, billed monthly the increase would be also 68%.
02/05/2025 04:30:09 PM · #19
I went from monthly and paid 1 year upfront and the price stayed the same,
see what happens next year .

My annual prepaid option was $230. I am starting to think that Adobe has moved to individual pricing based on some unspecified criteria, maybe living in Switzerland is one of them.

In any case, I have left Adobe and will use ON1, or Darktable if I need more sophistication, from now on.

Oh, well, after 18 years (I started with beta in 2007) I am no longer a Lightroom user. I did the final cancellation today and it was an interesting experience. First I got an offer of 2 months free, then an online chat with Adobe agent about a custom offer for me. I got down to $130 for a year! That made it an increase of 20% from previous price, significantly lower than 68%. If I got this offer earlier I would have accepted it but it was too late for me.

My advice for anyone who gets an outrageous increase from Adobe, talk to them, you might negotiate a better deal.

I've been putting it off, but this just reminded me to change my payment plan from monthly to annually. No price increase for me until February 2026!

I installed the 30 day trial of ON1 now and indeed it looks very good. Easy to switch from anyone used to Lightroom. Even easier on some points, such as no more import, just select the folder.

I bought a software license approx. 20 years ago of a package (can't remember the name) that was taken over by Adobe and as result I got a free Lightroom license. Been working with version 3.6 for years but am now running into the limitations with new RAW formats. I don't want DNG conversion each time.

So it has been cheap and 50 USD for ON1 should not brake the bank either ;-) I more or less knew I would have to add this to the price of the new camera.

Thanks for the tip !!!

That's great, Willem. I can recommend this tutorial to get started quickly:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9QGQ6T4CjQ4

It covers all basics and clarified some things for me that were not obvious. I am very happy now with the change, ON1 has some interesting features that I did not see in Lightroom.

I recently purchased ON1 for $50 and when I sat down to play with it a bit, it was very similar to LR which made me very very happy.

So far, I’m pleased with ON1 and look forward to really learning its features. It’s because of this thread that I bought ON1 and I’m glad I did. Thank you all!!
