You know, now that you mention it. That would be a great topic for a challenge. "Fishing flies" are some of the most incredible pieces of art and have some spectacular colors. Cheap to buy and come in a multitude of colors. Some photos I've seen that have incorporated them are really cool. I suggest that team "Finepix" sets the pace and forges ahead with this new initiative. Onward ho!! |

man...I was at work today and looking outside, the sky looked amazing. It looked like a painting. There were dark clouds and it looked like someone cut into them with a knife and brought out the most colorful, deep-looking gouges in it...it almost made me sick (wish it would have then I could have gone home and grabbed the camera and headed out to a place other than littered streets, power lines, and tacky signs as far as the eye could see).

I like it a lot. I'm not sure if this will appeal to a lot of people, but I will try to shoot something decent sometime this week and post the picture(s) here in this thread.
I remember years ago, when I was making them (not really sure why I don't do it anymore...) I would buy books and I could just spend hours studying the pictures. Such bright and sharp colors. Flys (and other lures as well) are made with the intention of catching the fish's eye. It also use to catch mine!
So yeah... Let's do that, a "Fly or other fishing lure" challenge... Everyone is welcome!

Hey deapee! Quit your job like I did! You'll have infinite time to shoot pictures and eat lots of Kraft dinners!!! (just kidding... I'm doing allright... I have enough money to add spaghetti sauce in it!)

I'm working on number 2 as we speak. It looks strong but there's a few days left in voting so who knows what can happen. :-D

Thi is too funny because as I'm stretching my brain to figure out what to do for the Low-Tech challenge, I was really thinking I might get a pie pan on a string and do the classic "Low-Tech" fake UFO sighting. Never thought of having Marvin the Martian as a celebrity cameo. Is his rate reasonable?

He works pretty cheap but jeez! He's got such an ego, insisted having the best make-up room with champagne... I'll never work with him again!
So? Did you shoot any flies?

The low tech challenge is over and the FinePix S5100 gallerie has changed quite a bit. Condradulations to deapee who now holds 1st and 2nd place (knocking me out of the top three). dpakoh moves from 2nd to 3rd.
#1.
#2.
#3.
Nice work guys! I'm still waiting to see what the S5100 girls will come up with!

I have a few shots that might be worthy of uploading, but my Photoshop has been freaking out on me (it doesn't want to open anymore) and I can't get into it to clean up my photos...eventually I'll put them up, though.
I can't help but think I might have gotten a dud or something...the pictures aren't coming out nearly as clearly as I expected them to >_< |

has anyone purchased or used the teleconversion lens TL-FX9? Just curious if it's worth it or not.

I bought one along with my new S5100, I haven't used it yet out in the field, but my tests weren't very promising, as 1.5X is not much of an improvement. But I guess that the serious vignetting at low zoom wouldn't allow for more.... I'll be glad to post some test shots tomorrow for you to compare. |

It takes some practice. Try setting the camera to SOFT mode and then run them through PS at USM 500%, .1, 0.
If taking a shot of a person or thing close to a backdrop (under 15" or so) you are more likely to get the backdrop in focus than the subject.
Lastly, make sure you have enough light - outdoor shots will be nice, indoor requires lots of light to get a decent image.

And remember, you can STACK them to get even more...
ON my 602 the max zoom is 210mm. So one 1.5 gives me 315mm, two give me 472. 2.0 ones exist as well, but only the Funi and Olympus ones get good reviews, optically speaking.
I have decided to get a D70next year, so I am holding off on a TCON or WCON for now. I'd still like one of each, but doubt i'd get enough of my investment back to justify the expenditure. I'll be seling my stuff to get a decent lens. Like this one
i am currently shopping for a tripod and head. Boden 3021 and not sure on a head yet.
