I have a $200 budget for some lighting. I would like to do still life as well as portraits. Can someone give me some information. Much thanks.

Here is a clever setup for a tight budget: studio lighting on a budget
Halogen work lights are also pretty inexpensive - but very hot! Add some nice white foam-core boards and you can do a lot. |

Thanks for posting that! I like that last image but I have to say I don't find that highlight in her hair pleasing at all.
Here's a link for making your own light tent:

There is also a link somewhere with plans for building your own light stands, backdrop stand and much more, just out of PVC from the local Home Depot type place. I'll see if I can dig it up.

I'm soon planning on build two large (approx. 4ft by 6ft) soft boxes using PVC, silk damask and flourescent lights for under $100. I'll try to remember to post back when I've finished my project and sorted out the actual cost. |

I have built 2 80 x 80 cm soft boxes that use 8 Energy saving lights in each. I need to make a detailed post on it.
Here are the bits
Here they are finished
From the front
Here is an example image
Cost per stand in Euro was:
8 lamps @ 3.49 = 27.92
8 Sockets @ 1.25 = 11,25
2 Switches = 2.39
2 Windshield protectors = 3.00
Screws cable etc = 5.00
Cloth for difuser etc = 5.00
Tripod = 16.00
=======
TOTAL 70.56
I used bamboo for the arms.
Avoid cheap lamps, or at least look at the brightness in the shop. there are big differences. |
