Guys, i have been a lurker for a while but just joined yesterday. I am on the search for a nice camera. Nothing too pricey, but a decent one. Here is what i am looking for..
SLR like body
Say 10x optical zoom or so
Changeable lenses or additive lense capability
I was thinking Sony F717 or something of that sort... can you guys make suggestions and or let me know what you have. I wouldnt mind a used one. Just something for me and my family since my baby boy will be here in April and we want a camera besides my Fuji 2600z.
Thanks! |

Greetings, and Welcome to DPC,
I think it all depends on a few factors, such as your budget, what you plan on using the camera for, how long before you catch the highly contagious and rampant (at least around here) upgrade/trade in bug, what type of experience you have with photography (film or digital) etc. Perhaps that will give people a chance to offer their opinions a bit easier.

This is a perfect camera for your needs. Retails for around $397, you can get it on eBay for less I would assume. I've had mine for about 8 months and adore it. I recently had a visit from Santa who saw it in his heart to bring me a Rebel, so I might even be selling mine (along with all the accessories) for some lens $$$... :o)

go look at the finepix s5100 -- everything you're looking for, SLR-type body, 10x optical zoom, add-on lenses for zoom and wide angle and you can put UV/ND whatever filters on it too.

Ok. I have been using my 2600z for about a year or so. My experience with this camera i would say is average. Of course, there isnt that many options with that camera except point and shoot really. I have done macros and stuff but the wife tells me and of course i dont like the red eye i get out of it. I have tried the photoshop thing but i am getting tired of it. I just want a camera that i can take shots and get into a better hobby than working, upgrading, and fixing pcs. I dont know if its more affordable, but it is a better hobby and it will also drive spending more time out and about than sitting at home doing nothing but watching my big screen.
I will use the camera for all kinds of things from outside to inside, wildlife, family shots etc.
Hope this helps a bit better. I also want to try to stay under 400 if i can. I see the S5100 i can get for right at 400 and the s3100 for 299 with a memory stick from staples. I dont know if these are what i want though. I would prefer a 717 because my friend (smellyfish) had one and i loved it when I tried it. I hope he hasnt sold it yet... i would love to buy it from him.
Also, where can i buy used cameras from or refurbs? I am learning and learning and learning. Thanks |

It seem's that you're describing the Fujifilm S5100 to the detail!! Go for it!! ;-) |

Panasonic FZ20 is the best camera.
I think we're going to get a lot of conflicting advice here!
Here's how I back up my choice:
SLR appearance and feel.
Huge amount of 3rd party lens hoods and adapters, which gives a huge choice of additional lenses and filters.
12x Optical Zoom
Very sharp good quality glass.
Image Stabilisation.
F2.8 throughout entire zoom range.
Competitively priced.
Very fast burst mode. |

Check out the Canon S1 IS - 10x optical zoom with IMage stabiliser.
or Konica-Minolta A1 or A2 - 7x optical I think with Image Stabiliser.
The Canon I think is cheaper than the Konica-Minolta A1/A2
If you want an SLR like body I think you chould check out the Fuji S5000 or S7000.

just saw this thread after responding to you in my F717 sale thread - i think eBay you may be able to snag an F717 for around 430+shipping (that is, if you trust ebay. i use it all the time, but i can understand how if you've never used it before, a $400+ purchase may be something you aren't willing to try)

I myself have been a lurker for awhile. though i did join back in Oct. As well I am looking for equipment advice. In October, I finally made the change to digital and started with the Finepix S3000, I enjoy it but it's just not what I need to fullfill my photo needs. I spent 3 years doing b&w film photos using an older all manual camera similiar to the Pentax K1000, and an auto/manual Minolta Maxxum 400si. I would really like something that does extremely well with low light situations, as i prefer to do night time and low light photos. Also something that has a built in B&W mode. not usually a control freak but when it comes to exposure and such with my photos i want full control and the Finepix just doesn't allow that. anything that fits that under $500? |

Guys, I decided on the Nikon 4800. Great camera, not a slr like all the way, but it does have some size to it and seems to be a great camera. I havent found many reviews besides over at steves, but it does use the ed lens and from what i read its a great lens. It also has a 8.3x optical zoom and is 4 megapixels. So far, it has taken alot of pretty good images. But i think i need to take a course to learn the ins and outs of photography. |
