You can't always get what you want... You can't always get what you want. But if you try sometimes, you just might find, that you get what you need...
I went on a photo safari to shoot an image for the architecture challenge. I failed to bag one worthy of the challenge, but I did take pictures of structures by two notworthy architects. It was fun and educational. Just wish I could have captured images worthy of their work.
Gammage Theater - Frank Lloyd Wright

This is the second to the last building designed by the great American architect in 1959 just before he died.
The Arcosanti Project - Paolo Soleri
//www.pbase.com/azleader/arcosanti - more on PBase
This was built to demonstrate arcology (architecture + ecology) in the desert North of Phoenix, Arizona USA. That concept was invented by the Italian Architect Soleri.
More about this unique urban ecological experiment can be found here:

I really like your shot of the Gammage. We, too, have some works by noted architects in my small town. This is the Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art on the Cornell University campus. It was designed in 1973 by I. M. Pei.

Nice shot. I'd guess if we look around we'll all find great architecture, like Pei's, very close to us.
Frank Lloyd Wright lived in the Phoenix metro area in north Scottsdale. He built Taliesin West here which was a mecca for architects back in the 40s and 50s. He designed the Biltmore Resort and a number of homes in this area. Soleri of "archology" fame was one of his pupils. There is also the "Home of the Future" designed by Taliesin West archtects built here after Wright's death in the middle 60s.
I don't know who designed it but a favorite building of mine is the Math Department building down at the University of Arizona in Tucson. It is a 4 dimensional cube unfolded into 3 dimensional space so that it could be constructed. You gotta like stuff like that.

Hate to say it, Steph, but I'm a graduate of the U of Arizona. What is worse is I was a scholarship athlete down there and we took great pride coming up to Tempe and kicking ASU's behind! :)

Well, I've been to exactly one football game in my time there. It was my freshman year (1995). Not a Football fan, so not my problem. :) Loved the weather, loved the campus, loved my art program.

No problem. My sports were the more intellectual track and cross country. We kicked you there too though. :)
I used to clean the football stadium after games at the U of A. But I do get a "kick" out of it when the U of A gets ASU in football. We need not mention basketball. :)

atsxus,
I see you have taken pictures of sports... (Good picture, btw. I might have cropped it tighter)
It would be rude to even mention how the Arizona Diamondbacks kicked the Yanks at the World Series in 2001. I was in a box seat for one of those games. :)

Thanks. :) And um...where have the almighty Dbacks been the past few years, hmmmm? Without Randy Johnson (who I can't stand and don't want him as a Yankee) and Curt Schilling, they haven't done much.
I won't deny it...our pitching hasn't been much the past few years. And when one player is off their game, the rest of the team seems to suffer, but when we're on, there's no comparisson. And there's absolutely NO comparisson to a lazy sunday afternoon in the stands at Yankees Stadium eating a stadium dog and having a beer!!! Just wish there was a better selection of beer! LOL.
If you're interested in seeing more of my sports pics you can find them here: Yankees

I would be willing to place a small wager that the person who came up with that design had read a story called ... And He Built A Crooked House by Robert A. Heinlein. |

You are right... We here in Arizona are proud of the fact that we rose to the pinnacle of baseball glory faster than any other team, then fell to the depths of despair nearly as fast. :)
Btw, despite Randy Johnson's rocky start in the Big Apple you will learn to love him. Curt talks better, but Randy is a genius on the mound. Randy will carry you to the world title once again. He was the one that beat you in 2001.

Wow... What a nice collection of Yankees photography!
I did not realize you were such a big fan. Glad I rubbed it in as much as I did. :)
Unfortunately, you are right, the DBacks proved to be a flash in the pan. The reason is quite simple, nobody has the money to spend that the Yankees do year after year. The DBacks just got so far in debt building a championship team that their owner was forced out. That is why the Yanks were beat in the World Series this year. It must have killed you when Curt Schilling beat you. :)
My old college girlfriend is a huge Sox fan and I have to say I was pleased to see them win. The Yanks have far more Series wins than anyone and can affort to share the wealth. For NY it is just a disappointing loss, but for Boston it changes the whole way the town feels about itself.

Hopefully without the fourth-dimensional adventures encountered in the story! |

I'm not one of those New Yorkers that believes that the Yankees are infalible. We beat ourselves in 2001. We were DAMNED lucky to get as far as we did. If Mariano hadn't thrown the ball into center field we would have won. Yes, Randy and Curt pitched wonderful games, but we had it won. We messed up. And that's putting it politely.

Out here in PHX we prefer to think we were just better and that is why we came back from 2-3 down to win it. What was that game 6 score again? 15-2? :)
You have a great collection of online images apart from your Yankee shots. Very impressive.
Not to worry, Randy will take the Yanks back to the promised land no matter how many cameramen he has to shove out of the way. :)

I have bad grammer... meant to indicate the house was built in the mid-60s, not that Wright died in the mid-60s.
I knew he designed the Gammage Theater in 1959 and that it was his second to last building. I also knew that he had died before the Gammage was finished in 1962. I did not know that the design was so close to his death. He died April 9, 1959.
