I must look into purchasing a macro lens for the Rebel. Please advise me.... Thank you very much. Practical advise and sample pics would help me more than reading reviews which tend to confuse me more than help me.

There was a recent thread on this for another Canon user - check it out here.

I personally have the Tamron 90mm f/2.8 XR Di Macro and I really like it. Comes with a carry case and the lens hood, also has a 6 year warranty. Here is a thread on it.

Thanks guys. Krazyivan, sad to say but I can not get Tamron in Korea... wonder why not? Is it American exclusively? Surely can't be.

You cannot go wrong with the Canon 100mm f/2.8 USM Macro lens. It might be my favorite lens and the price really isn't that unreasonable...

As I stated in another thread, I shoot most of my images with the Tamron 90mm (1:1) Macro. It̢۪s very sharp and I picked mine up gently used for $285.

Here's a variety of images from that lens:

//www.neoscales.com/album/Snakes/slides/CinnamonPastel.html
//www.neoscales.com/album/People/slides/Mask2.html
//www.neoscales.com/album/People/slides/Sara12.html

These were shot with the 90mm and a 2X MC7 Teleconverter - still sharp:

It's a great macro and portrait lens (as is the Canon). I̢۪m certain the focus is much more quiet and smooth on the Canon. But in the end it was the combination of image quality and price that swung me to the Tamron.

How much does the Canon 100mm f/2.8 USM Macro lens usually go for? I'm also looking to buy a macro lens sometime in the future. Can anyone compare the pros and cons of the Canon and Tamron macros lenses mentioned in this thread?

the sigma 105mm is also good and not too expensive.

Got my 100mm f/2.8 macro on Friday. Bought it mainly for the fishtanks and flowers (and any cats I see). First thoughts are macro photography isnt as easy as some of these guys make out! I would however say its as sharp as my mk1 50mm f/1.8 and pretty darn close to the 70-200 f/4 L. Cost me less than £300. For me it was a close call between the Tamron and Canon - both will serve you well (but I still need to pay £40 for a hood)

One of the first shots taken at the weekend..

im happy with it as well. just look at Jacko's portfolio, most of his macro shots if not all were taken using the 105sigma with a 50mm reversed lens in front of it.

I have the Canon Rebel and the Canon 100mm 2.8. I original bought the Canon 50mm macro and sent it back the same day I got it.

You will not be disappointed with the Canon 100mm ask anyone that owns one.

I have the sigma 105mm f/2.8 Macro. It is extremely sharp, but the AF is slow. Overall, I would highly recommend it.

I probably paid around $450.00 for the Canon 100mm f2.8...
