Sorry but I have to say that my entry into the Breaking New Ground was my best work ever, and I'm pretty mad about it getting 16 twos and 19 threes and an overall abysmal performance in a challenge that should have embraced such techniques.
I understand it if such a technique wouldn't do well in another challenge, but in Breaking New Ground? Ok, well anyway, I appreciate the comments for those who left them. They from people I really respect, and that always helps soothe the hurt.
I can't imagine how I would be inspired by this to enter another challenge. But who knows.

I expected that would have made the top 20. It got an eight from me.

I think thats a awesome shot Neil. But the structured will win on here. Your shots are wonderful, and don't get discouraged! I admire your work!

I gave it a 9. I loved the softness of it. |

I didn't vote on this challenge because I am too new to digital photography to know what is new and different. That being said, I like this image a lot, and compared to some of the other images, this novice thinks you did a good job of Breaking New Ground! |

Some people see it as a slightly blurry flower shot, but most did NOT, and scored it pretty good. I dont see your beef.

Neil, I loved the shot.
I think there are probably only a handful of photographers on this site that would appreciate your artistic approach.
I couldn't help but think, looking at this photo, "it captures the essence of wind".
It should have scored better!
Voters are so...so....I'll say finicky.

I love the image, it's great. Strong yellow flower colors. Looks like a painting.
The "problem" is as it's always been... Most people like to see images that don't seem to be minipulated in any way, although I realize yours was not, they can't comprehend or appreciate anything that is "out of the norm".
Your entry doesn't fit the challenge topic that well (Breaking new ground) but I'd still probably have given it a 7 at least cause I like it. :)

It's one of the most enjoyable and interesting photos I have seen here in nearly two years. There is no problem or issue with this work.

You can't submit something like that to a challenge and expect it to do extremely well and that's all the more reason for submitting it in my opinion; we need to see more of this kind of work.

Thanks everyone, this is a great community and that's seems to be the part the fits the best for me.
I guess I see these very differently from most people. In all the motion shots I've done (except Halley's Pepper), the whole point was to "paint" with the objects and their color. I don't see a blurry flower--I see strokes. Maybe I need to have my medicine checked. ;)
(Chris, I'd love to hear why you would say this doesn't qualify as meeting the challenge in Breaking New Ground--maybe that's the key to the bad marks. But I don't think so because there are lots of "straight" shots above it in the ranking.)
Anyway, I hope DPC comes up with some other ways to share such work here besides challenges, as we've been discussing a bit in other threads, because I do love doing them, and I do like this community. Who knows, maybe it's a phase and I'll grow out of it.

I have to say... I gave it a 5 and don't know what I was thinking! It must've been one of those times that I was voting and just getting annoyed and scoring low on things I shouldn't be! I hate it when I get that way! I usually try and catch that and stop voting!
Sorry if you're the victim of my bad behavior ;)
You are correct to say that this wouldn't do well in any other challenge, but it fits this one perfectly!

Neil, I beg to disagree with you. I don't think that was your best work ever. You've shown us many, many very fine images both in your portfolio and in your challenge entries. I recently added your "Winter Bud at Sunset" to my favs so I don't feel bad at all about saying I think that was your best work ever.
Soft Radience got some low votes as you said, but it got more in the 8-9-10 range than it did in the 1-2-3 range; and it's final score of 5.454 may not be what you hoped for but it's not that low of a score.

The sad fact may not be that your score was not higher but rather that all of those who gave the very low marks did not offer any reasons as to why. I find your "blurr" series of photos to be fresh and innovative. You may consider freezing your brain for 50 years and then re-submitting these shots when they might receive their deserved appreciation.
Don't throw in the towel, just vent on some terrible photos. ;-)

Thanks again for all the kind supportive statements. I do understand that this style is not for everyone. And I am not giving up this style of photography--as you can guess, I really like it!!
It's not the absolute score either (heck, I've done a lot worse with other shots I like). I think it was a relatively poor showing in a challenge where I thought I had my greatest strengths and to which, in my judgement, I had a really strong entry.
It makes me doubt my judgement in shooting for challenges here, which is why I started this by saying "I give up".
Thanks again for the support and the laughs to those who provided them below/above, depending on your orientation ;) |

I confess that I'm one of those who didn't understand either style or technique for the simple reason that I don't know it :( I'm glad however that you brought the subject up because it teaches me to look a little closer...I, like so many others didn't like what we perceived as blur. Don't give up because of my ignorance, I think the photo is rather special now.

It was certainly a good photo, and one of the few photos that broke new ground IMO, but it doesn't rate as highly to me as many of the others in your series. I've tried this out myself, and you make an extremely difficult technique look very easy. |

Oh, your photo was great, it was the best one of the challenge!
All kidding aside, it was a nice photo, and the main thing to remember is that what you think about your photos and work is what's important, and that differing personal tastes are what make life interesting. I humbly acknowledge that I was one of the few that gave yor photo a 3, but admittedly, I am a beginner and freely acknowledge I barely know my head from my ass when it comes to photography technique or style. For me, the "movement" in a photo is visually more appealing (to me) if there is a stationary or stabilizing force or object. (For the record, I am so new to this site none of my images have garnered a score of 5 or above yet....) Keep up the efforts and I'll try to learn to be more open for new interpretations too ....... |

I love it neil.
I didn't vote, but would have given it an 8.
I'm feeling the same way about my current entry on "3"
making me not want to submit to anymore challenges.
Oh well.
Keep shooting!

Neil I gave you a 7. Sometimes I am unable to fathom the reasons some people have for voting the way they do. You do great work. |
