Hi! My sister is looking to buy a new digital in the $500 range. Her three kids are very active in sports, so she wants something that she can capture good action shots with. Any suggestions? Thanks!

I can't really help much, but I hate to see you talking to yourself :)
Check out steve's digicam website for mid range cameras, you could possibly get a 300D/rebel, but that's just the basics, you would need lenses.
What about Panasonic, Fujifilm, Sony P&S's...they vary in price but there are some really classy ones out there now.
Good Luck with the search.

Sports photogs dish out big coin for fast lenses .. if you're talking an entire camera for $500 then you mean a point-and-shoot? I think all the new higher end p-n-s cams have some sort of sports setting (a little running guy on the options knob). Something like a Canon A80 or a Sony (not sure which is their best model).

What kind of sports? Indoor or/and outdoor sports?
Different sports may require a different camera. Does she need a good video mode, longer zoom, image stabilization, ease of use, small camera (purseable? is that a word?), certain type of memory, future add-on lenses, etc.

Both indoor and outdoor. Her daughter is on select soccer, basketball, and volleyball teams, and runs track. Her son plays soccer, football, and basketball. (Busy family!) My sis is NOT tech-savvy...just wants a good camera that will help her catch some nice, clear action photos of the kids. I think she may have a little bit of an unrealistic expectation from a p-n-s, but I told her I'd ask the knowledgeable folks here at DPC for her!

Panasonic DMC-f20 may be a viable choice. 5 megapixels.
It comes with a burst mode as to take consecutive images, hot shoe for add on flash for indoor sports, manual focus image stabilization, 12X zoom which will zoom in on the action. Around $550 or so but the 12X zoom and image stabilization is worth it.
Depends on if she plans to make large prints or not. Another choice would be the Panasonic DMC-FZ3. The 3 megapixel version of the F20 has everything except the manual focus and the hotshoe. Good for prints up to 8X10. Cost around $370 or so.
Of couse both have sports mode in which the settings are set automatically for you as does most cameras in the $300 or above range. The settings may not work perfectly everytime thus is good to have a camera in which you can test/play around with the settings too.

Canon Powershot S1 IS (less than $350). It has a fast lens and long, image-stabilized zoom, plus one of the best video modes available on any camera. The Panasonic DMC-FZ10 and DMC-FZ20 would also be good candidates in that price range. |

Of course Kodak,Canon, Fujifilm, Konica Minolta has cameras in the 10X or 12X zoom range with Image Stabilization in the $500 range. Lower lighting requires the use of a tripod and most indoor sporting events may not allow this.
So it's something to thing about.

My suggestion is the Minolta Dimage Z3, the Finepix 5100, or the Panasonic FZ20 or FZ10 if you can find it. The 5100 does not have any kind of image stabilization, but does fit into the budget much better than the Minolta or Panasonic.
Keep in mind that accessories (memory, batteries etc) will add on about another $100 to the camera price when you are looking at bodies.
And totally check out imaging resource. It's a great site.

The reason I favor the Canon is that it's nearly pocket size, uses cheap CompactFlash media, and can serve as a camcorder in a pinch.

I got one for just these reasons. But, with the EVF and slow auto-focus/shutter-lag, I'm not sure it's the best choice for "action shots" as this thread's titled. I've found it very hard to use for motion panning or other "action" activities. |

The Panasonic FZ20 would probably be a good choice for her. It has a wonderful 12 times stabilized zoom and is very quick. It also takes nice movies. I love mine! |

One more vote for the Panasonic FZ20, B & H has it for $499.00 right now. Very good action and great zoom and very easy to use. The anti shake works extremely well. Colors are great and pictures very sharp. |
