Get anything but a Sony, it was the worst computer we have owned. In just a little over one years time it was totally shot and would have cost plenty to get it up and running again. From the very beginning it was just a pain to use, didn't like to accept all programs, we had to reformat the hard drive just about every 3 weeks and then before it decided to die we were formatting every few days, not too handy. Also have a good friend with one and it has been just as bad, fortunately she bought a 5 year warranty, the only down side the computer is in the shop most of the time. They also seem to be more expensive than many other computers with the same equipment.

Excuse my ignorance - I don'tknow anyone with a Mac. Can you say, create a document in Windows Word and bring it up in Mac OS? Simple conversions like that?

No, I meant getting the two machines to talk to one another.
PCs and Macs use the same file formats. You open a Word file the same way you do on the PC. The same is true for any document, cd or dvd.

Here is more about the subject.

You can get office for mac, that works exactly like office on a pc, only you're less likely to get a virus from it. Or you can use "Pages" which comes wiht all new macs, and will read and write word documents. Photoshop and PS Elements both work dandy on the mac, and are even a little cheaper than on PC. I was a pc user for years, but I bought my wife a mac 3 years ago because I didn't want to have to deal with helping her fix all the little things that went wrong. Then I used it. Now I use macs almost exclusively.
