My bank said sometimes thiefs will get the information they need, then wait a year or more to use it. So I'd put more than a 3 month warning on my credit report.

Yes! I lend in 8 states, fraud is every where. But you folks from the Bay area south in California (LA !) all should have a warnings on all three major credit reporting agencies.(CBI,TRW,TRU) You should put a password and phone number on the report. This way if the Bank doesnt call you and clear it when somebody applies for credit in your name, you have recourse. (15yrs in Banking, they come up with new ideas all the time)......Just good common sense, its the world we live in.

all my credit cards say "SEE ID" on them...and have said that since the day I got them. Does that mean I should tell visa and mastercard that I'm not paying the bill because they were unauthorized purchases?

Dave, you prob. seen it. The cashier either doesnt look at the back of the card, or looks but doesnt pay attention. If you truley have a unauthorized purchase. Call your credit card company right away. ALWAYS MAKE YOUR PMT!!!, once you contact the vender and dispute the charge, they will take that charge out of bill until settled. The store has 30 days to provide the reciept from the purchase, if determind it wasnt you, the store will eat the charge and it will be removed from your billing stmt......
Another note on the CONSUMER FRAUD STMT on your credit report, its only good when a new credit application is submitted. It doesnt help on current loans/cc....Credit card fraud is the big one, but I've been burned on vehicle purchases, 2nd mortgages, along with credit card approvals.

ok, my 2 cents... Most of my cards say 'see identification".. however.. I have rearely been asked to show id, and some just glance at it to make sure there is writing on the back.. not really reading it.
I'm sure you could scribble anything you want on it.
having said that.. the post office here has signs posted stating the cards must have a signature on the back, not even 'see id', otherwise they won't accept them. um.. so, the one day someone actually did stop me, and 'kindly' pointed out that fact.. she accepted it anyway!
so, my conclusion is... you can do whatever you want.. merchants will do whatever they want.. and if thieves want it bad enough.. they will get what they want to.
Just don't make it easier for them.

On a side note.. I had a friend get her identity stolen a few years back when she bought a car. Someone actually working at the dealership stole her info. It took many years to get her stuff straightened out..I'm not even sure it's all back to normal yet.
