I am still going back through my hard drive, deleting what I won't ever work on, and trying to finish the shots I never finished processing. (Yes, I have backups of the ones I'm deleting).
This one is from my Alaska trip a year ago August, and the balance of light just wasn't right, so I've tried to balance it appealingly in PS using levels with gradient masks on layers.
I like the scene, though somehow I am not sure it's enough to be attractive to people and so I am asking.
You can just respond here, but up to the first 10 people who leave a constructive comment on the photo, and a link to a photo in your portfolio you want critiqued, I will visit that photo over the weekend and return the favor. I am limiting it to 10 because, if this works out, I will have other photos too, and I want to have time to both finish them and do the same "trade" for honest critiques.
Disclaimer: I am looking for honest critiques. And if you put a link to one of your photos, I will also give you an honest critique.
Regards--Neil

The shot doesn't seem to have any defined subject. It looks like a crop from what would have been a better overview of the deck. I really like the golden red cast on the chairs to the right, and think they would have made for a nice shot on their own. The sunset also has some attractive colour, but it is blocked out by the foreground. The photo is just slightly tilted to the right, and the effect of that is amplified by the perspective of the railing on the right. That really detracts from the "polished" look this should have. Also I dont know if it's just because of the resizing but the whole image appears a bit soft.
Overall I think it just needed a bit of recomposition to bring it all together.
Hope that helps, I don't have anything I can think of worth critiquing right now though. |

Thanks, I agree on all counts. I guess I'm not done. But unfortunately, it's not a crop. I agree I wish now I had more of the deck. And as to the sharpness, yes I did not sharpen this after resizing, partly because I tend to like images softer and I have trouble seeing "soft" when other people do. Maybe it's because I take so many purposefully blurry shots ;) |

Neil, I think this shot has loads of potential perhaps from a different perspective more so. I love what you have done with the sky, great. I can also visualize this from a different height or angle looking lower at the deckchairs and more of the sky as the feature. As it stands now I feel some of the bottom needs a crop as it detracts from the sky and is a little dark :-)
Haven't got a particular shot to critique now but any comments in my portfolio would be appreciated...I don't have any !
