I was directed to this site by a friend. If this isn't the most awesome series of photos ever, I don't know what is! Totally blew me away!

Exceptional series of images. I do believe that both birds are actually Eagles. The brown one is simply an imature Bald eagle.

They are both eagles. The one lacking the white color is a juvenile (and acting like it as well). |

Mating flight behaviour according the the link below. Here's a quote:
"On their mating flight, they behave like aerial artists: They perform rolls, somersaults and twists holding on with their claws."
Fantastic shots!

I do not believe that is the case here. Looks like an immature eagle trying (successfully) to steal a fish from a mature eagle. Likely they would not be (dating) mating due to age.

jb- I know that bald eagles don't acquire their adult plumage until they are several years old (7 I think, but maybe 5). Do they not mate until then? |

They make the change at 4-5 years. This is a teenager (probably 4)
To my knowledge they do not mate until mature but I could be wrong.

Here are two in a fight over a duck one killed and was eating on a post. I witnessed it so know it was not mating. I also have witnessed the same behavior during mating where they lock talons and spiral down. They then break away just before hitting. We had two a few weeks ago do that and they hit the ground. Turned out it was two males fighting over a female and neither let go. Both survived after rehab.
edit: by the way - the link posted here are great shots! Wish they were mine!

I can't believe 26 people opened this photo and did not comment. What a capture! And the mood lighting was perfect. What ISO?

100 ISO, lol.
It was taken in broad daylight. I felt a little romantic lighting was in order considering the intimacy of the event. ;-)

Zeuszen thanks for the fine sense of decorum. Great capture. Sometimes it is better to let the imagination fill in the details. |
