After receiving some miserable scores recently I decided to spend more time on the "best friends" challenge and try to be a little more creative. I feel that (once again) thinking outside of the box is being punished in the voting. Is it me, or are a lot of these entries rather snapshot-ish in style? Lots of photos of children and animals that would grace many famly photo albums but not tons of creativity overall. Many are very cute however.

well, just like always, people take the challenge too literally. I'm being punished too, and no comments, either, which upsets me most.

I feel like there is being a change in dpc way of view... guess people are getting to the more simple and not the very diferent things... i have tried to come up with things outside the box and guess what... got passed over by it. People don't seem to get it or are not willing to try and understand they just pass it by... which is a shame. ooohhh! well!! if you at least like your entry thats what it counts... just keep on going the way you like it and don't bother with what others here think... thats my way of seeing things. I for instance just take photos at but them up on a challenge just to have something to look at but my best photos are not from challenges... I like what i shot so thats what it counts to me...
Sorry to get a little of topic but just had to spill it out.

I'm not looking too good score wise either. Don't know why. I thought the picture was pretty good quality but yet, different than the average photo. Don't know what everyone is looking for but 4.1 really isn't making me feel like I am even close to find it... And yes, I haven't received one comment yet either.

Regardless of the subject matter, there needs to be a higher level of quality in these images. I would agree that they are 'snapshotish'. Not only in the composition and mood of the images but the quality is lacking. I have a lot to learn myself as I am new to photography, but I do try to make sure that even if my idea is not a winner, I execute it to the best of my ability. With that said, my score in this challenge is not something to brag about.

Creativity seems in some challenges to be a bad idea! But my opinion is that no matter what the score, enter what feels right to you as a photographer. I have had dismal scores so many times, it initially bothered me, now I don't care...I keep trying to improve my abilities, that's all I do. Oh yes, I want to have fun doing it too!

Jennifer, you're not supposed to reveal your entry during voting. You might like to edit that out.

yeah but it seems to me that "best friends" yealds itself to being somewhat ->snapshotish<- by its very nature... the best best friends shots imho are taken with a disposable camera in a park somewhere...

just me though ... maybe I am too literal

comments would be nice though !!!!

I tend to agree primarily with this, but if you try to catch a more candid moment of best friends it won't have that "snapshotish" feel to it. This challenge wasn't as easy as it appeared at first. ;^)

Checked this forum to ease my pain :) To reference a post I read in another challenge, "Somebody must really hate my picture!" But apparently MORE than just one someone!

Nonetheless, I'm happy with my shot, although early returns show I'm obviously in the minority. I spent several hours and numerous trips to reshoot until I got it to look like what I wanted.

And I was dismayed that no one seemed to see in it what I saw. AND THEN, I got my first comment!! And joy, there is another soul out there who sees it.

And all is right with the world.

You must be talking about ketchup & mustard (x and x). LOL I don't know why there were so many of those shots in this challenge. I was surprised by all the small photos in this challenge. Made me think people were using their camera phones. :-)

Yes. I have to say I did get my first comment and they had good things to say about it which made me feel better that someone else out there liked what I did besides myself...

I've decided not to force things. I won't enter a Challenge or take a picture if it isn't right.

I think I could have taken a few good Best Friend shots but since the two people I wanted to shoot were busy I dropped it instead pushing.

I don't want to enter anymore uninspired things just to get in the race. Getting nailed for lackluster work isn't much fun or productive.

For example, entering a photo that is totally boring (posed)but has "lines" only comes through as such but if you see something that's really interesting, with drama(perhaps?)....that's your shot.

That's why I got nailed to the cross for a few entries and I ain't goin there again.

Mine is been punished too, but at least I had received 3 good comments from people that really see the friendship in my shot. It seems to be that you have to do a huge work in photoshop to win a ribbon, but I barely have time to shoot something to fit the challenge, and no time at all to convert my mediocre images (as you voters suggest) into a deserving ribbon.
03/16/2005 11:18:36 AM · #18
well my photo sucks to everyone so far and i recieved a nasty comment saying pretty much "what were you thinking? you think you'll win a ribbon with that entry!" pretty ignorant i'd say.

First entry and a new Canon20D in the mail to me. Enjoyed stalking and watching. Yup this one is getting a hard critique. Compared to other challenges there does seem to be more snapshots and family photos. All good especially for your own family. Still life pics of objects is another out of the box friendship that some tried to use. All in all, friendship is in the heart and usually can't be frozen in time on a computer monitor or a piece of paper. Good luck to all.

I'm hovering around a 5.0... I'm pretty disappointed. My shot for this challenge was a candid one, and one that I personally think has strong composition and emotion... but people just seem to vote low.

Not a single comment.

Meh.

Whew, ok good I'm not the only one. Even though this is only my second submission with Lines being my first I was still hoping to keep above 5.0 avg. That is proving rough to do in this challenge. ;)

I have received some nice comments though.
03/16/2005 11:37:16 AM · #24
I'm sitting at just below 5.0 as well, it's my frist challenge and I thought I came up with a really artful and innovative picture based on the theme. I think I'm being a little punished for that as well :)

It's my first entry so if I make a decent showing I'll be happy. I've been pretty harsh with my voting as well. There are some good snapshots in there but not much that is really 'art' to me....

I didn't enter the Friends Challenge so I have no hidden agenda, but looking at the thumbnails, the quality of the photos in this challenge is significantly below the norm for challenges here IMHO. Some challenges run hot, some cold. I predict this one will run cold and that the blue will be won by a 6.7 or so picture. Just my entry in the betting pool.
