Sigh, I knew when I submitted the photo it wouldn't do well...the symmetry isn't on a standard axis....Oh well...I think it's a good shot.

yes. i'm with you two on this. the photo itself doesn't need to be perfectly symetrical. (unless you want a good score). Oh well, I like my picture and I just hope I stay at 5.0 |

I've gotten two 'this is not symmetrical' comments so far, and it'd be interesting to know how many people have flunked me for not having a mirror-simple symmetry.
So I guess I'll join your bitter-misunderstood-artist club then ;)

I kept with simple symmetry on purpose just because I wanted a simple, but pleasant photo. I've gotten positive comments about the symmetry but am maintaining a score ~4.5 Not sure what the public is looking for here :-) |

I've given 3-10's, several 9's, and several 8's to images that are not perfectly symmetrical. I think there are many great shots in this challenge.

I don't think that perfect symmetry is a requirement either. What I sorta look for in the 'symmetry' photos is an image that uses symmetry to create some extra sensation in the photo. If I have to look for the symmetry in the photo, then I don't think the theme was well portrayed in the photo...

Defintion of Symmetry from the American Heritage Dictionary:
Sym me try 1.A relationship of characteristic correspondence, equivalence, or identity among constituents of a system or between different systems. 2. Exact correspondence of form and constituent configuration on opposite sides of a dividing line or plane or about a center or axis. 3. Structural or functional independence of direction; isotropy 4. BEAUTY AS A RESULT OF BALANCE OR HARMONIOUS ARRANGEMENT-SEE SYNONYMS AT PROPORTION
I personally decided to go with definition #4 of symmetry because I wanted the challenge of balance and harmony within a more complex composition, I guess I knew that most voters would be defining the challenge in the most narrow way possible. That's fine I am not trying to "win" as much as I am trying to challenge my own skills. |

I think photofly has a very good point with his variation of defintions, and I agree that #4 is one of the best for this application. Perfect mirror imaging is not necessarily a requisite, as some seem to be demanding.
In my "Amphoto Guide to Photography", symmetry is addressed under the subheading of "Balance", so balance is part of the issue.

Fotofly, that is exactly the attitude I have. I challenge myself and do the best I can.

i'll join the club too... altough i'm not sure about the symmetry in my photo...
i didn't rate more than 5 on photos that show mirror symmetry but don't have visual impact (i gave a 6 for a very clear, focused shot). i rated 8's on photos that don't have mirror symmetry but have visual impact.
i hope i'll see some 10's (i rated about 20 pics so far so i think i will) |

I thought my picture is very good this time. I am the only one to like it. I think i did not undarstand it. it is a very bad score. |

I would be interested to know, are these shots that are getting 'not symmetrical' comments studio shots?
I did comment in another thread that studio shots might get a harder time than outdoor shot, but hasten to add that I will not be so harsh.
My shot is a studio shot that is very symmetrical, but by no means mirror symmetrical and it's doing quite well (touch wood). I have had no 'not symmetrical' comments ... yet!
PS. Hi Mieka ;D |

My difficulty is that the challenge said 'use symmetry and balance to compose your photograph'. But I knew people wouldn't read/understand that. Hell, i'm just looking for photos that i like when voting, really. That instruction, to my mind, makes it almost an open challenge - in that a good photo is going to have balance, almost by definition.
Sill under 5 though. Boo.

I've rated several shots quite well that were not perfectly symmetrical. The ones I do rate lower are ones where the photographer appears to be trying for the textbook definition of symmetry and misses for some reason. Most cases it's cropping related. The thing is, all the non standard symmetrical shots I've rated well have good balance to the overall shot. |

I haven't found any images yet in the challenge that did not contain or use symmetry in some way. I have been rating photos based on quality and impact. I give 10s to photos that make me feel or see "beyond" the image. I have several 10s this time round.

The symmetry challenge is all about "cropping".
Symmetry in an image can be brought out dramatically just in the way the image is cropped. It is easy to see which photographers paid close attention to this important axiom of photography.
As in all challenges, I judge the image on its own merits regardless of topic. Winners must be able to stand on their own first.
Attention to the challenge topic is what sets the top images apart from the others. If the connection to the challenge topic is to subtle then most people won't make it.
Here is good advice from a fine young man, my son, who keeps telling me:
"Keep it simple, Dad!"

My entry isn't cropped :P
But yes, you make some good points and your son has a wise head on his shoulders. |
