You folks are way out of my league, but I just submitted a photo to the "colors" challenge anyway. Before I did, I carefully read the rules - e.g. about no spot editing and NO text. Then I looked at the winners of the practical jokes challenge - each one seems to break at least one of the rules. How can I learn more about just what IS and is NOT allowed? I obviously don't get it yet. :-( |

(In the rules for this specific challenge, the non-Photoshop, spot edit thing didn't count)

The rules were waved for that challenge.
I was a 'blue light special' that we have sometimes for a holiday or theme challenge.
Don't worry, you'll catch on in no time.
:) Good luck and welcome.

Justine and Mavrik, thank you both for sorting me out on this issue (and for the "welcome"). In future I'll know to check the rules for EACH challenge seperatly. |

welcome beetle....
just to warn you, some of the comments people leave about your photo during the voting stage may sound too harsh, but they are NOT intended that way. NEVER take the comments personal and you will do great (if its a negative comment). Use the comments as advice on how you improve your next shot.
I have learned a lot from the great people here and it has helped me improve my shots.
good luck...
James

Thank you all so much. I am so impressed that you folks are both very talented AND nice! I'm not sure how often I'll manage to come up with something worthwhile, but I'll enjoy trying. Good luck to you all. |

Dont feel bad, I posted some messages and no one even said hello to me. This week will be my first entry, and I hope to be able to vote on enough of the pics to have my votes count. Good luck to you!

Beetle and Placebo,
I'm with you.
I think us lowly, no-account, newbie, nothing, low-lifer photographers should all band together. We should start a ground roots movement to overthrow the super-duper, fantastico, high-falutin', hotsy-totsy super photographers with their fancy cameras and incredibly, incredible pictures.
Take that all you "jacko" and "jmsetzler"s of the world!
Low-lifers need love, too!

There seemed to be a newbie trend here, so I'm putting my two cents in. I have just submitted my first entry for weather...Jeez. It's okay. I live in sunny new mexico, I decided on an outdoor shot, but it could have been better I think. So far, everyone has been super helpful. Good luck to all. And welcome all newbies....(that's me!) |

I would like thrown in another "Rules" question. I have come a cross a few pictures that would suggest spot editing but I'm not sure. What I am referring to are the pictures that are mainly black and white except for the main focal point. There are several of these entries in the color challenge. Is this allowed? Is this some sort of "gray area" that is allowed? I don't want to give anyone a bad score if it is. |

K Rob - it's done by desaturating all of the colors in the picture except the one in question. In the case of say the crayons, notice that none of the other colors are even close to blue. So they desat all red and green - the only thing left was blue.
they are legal - vote accordingly.

Okay, thanks for the explanation. But how about the one where there are everal colors still there and some that are desaturated? There are a couple like that too. |

It happens when only one or more of the six or seven colors are desaturated. |

Standard Hue & Saturation dialogs give you 6 colours to play with, not just RGB.
Also, the Hue & Saturation dialog in PS is ridiculously powerful. Not only can you desaturate red, you can also define what red is and so desaturate some reds and not others. This all means that you can easily do what you're asking within the one dialog, which is DPC legal.
Hope this clears it up!
Edit: Oh, and welcome to all the n00bs! (Where are my manners?)

Very Informative! Thanks for the detailed replies guys. It does clear things up for me. I guess I've never really tried this so I had no clue. DAMN! Now I have to go back and re-vote. |
