I can say it's the first time score doesn't bother me too much. I like my entry and I am happy with the result regardless the voting.

Interesting comments so far. Thanks....well....not all....I do wish voters would reread the challenge description prior to voting. Sometimes they inadvertently rewrite it in their minds and then vote.

Not bad. I wasn't sure if I was going to enter this one. I decided to go ahead and submit last night.

I too am not very concerned with this one. I mostly entered to keep in the fray...not the best reason I know, but I've gotten two helpful comments which is payment enough.

I agree. I have one comment which suggests that we HAD to find a letter in nature, which still doesn't apply to my image. Oh well, I guess you can't win them all.

I submitted my very first challenge entry! woo-hoo! I normally only take photos of people so this was fun and "hard" for me. Just one quick question tho....is it normal to not have any comments. I wanted to use this as a learning experience. You know, gain knowledge from everyone in the hopes of retaining just 1% to better yourself.

The day is always just a little bit better when a 4 creeps out of the swamp, stands up and walks off as a 5... : )
04/06/2005 03:02:44 PM · #64
I agree the day just seems better when a lowly 4 grown into a pretty little 5.

BTW for those of you waiting for comments.

Stats: You have rated 43 of 270 images (16%) in this challenge.
You have commented on 43 images (16%) in this challenge.

I'll try to get everyone by the time voting ends..

Here is my update. I now have 2 comments! Thank you. I really do like knowing what people think so that I have some way to improve. That is the exact reason that I started my obsession with this site.

I'm new to DPC, and this is my second challenge I have entered. It is truly a thrill to participate and yes, I've been watching the update button all day.

A bit obsessive-compulsive of me, but I have been tracking the score changes as they occur during the day on an excel spreadsheet and determining the avg of the votes received since the previous check. I currently have an average score of 5.4468, with scores ranging from a low of 4 to a high of 8 (thank you, somebody). I just got a 1 (one). What gives? Talk about statistical outliers.....

Just thought of a scenario - someone could've modified their vote, lowering their score while somebody else voted for the first time. Could show up as a net of one.......

So much for statistics.

Hum so many things like bridge and construction items are made to look like letters and actually are named after them. Great job to all those who really found the "accidental" letters!! You have met the challenge!

These examples all qualify for the challenge and in fact, they were not made to look like a letter - I mean you think engineers said "Lets' make a brace that looks like the letter "X" - maybe that will hold up the bridge."? No - the letter resemblence was incidental (or accidental).

But the fact is that the most unique and interesting shots will be the ones found in nature. However, technical abilities can compensate or denegrate either man-made objects or nature shots. The voting results will decide. :)

I don't know if I agree with this, I frankly don't find all the Y,X, V trees very interesting,.. thats not saying that I am giving them bad scores or anything, They are just not as creative as some of the other pictures....

I think that the point is that it is not hard to "find" a letter if you go and photograph something that is already named after that letter - doesn't show much innovation. That the object was designed for a purpose before being named is irrelevant.

Not that any of that should affect its validity under the theme - just lack of ingenuity is a scoring factor for many.

Incredibly, my pet portrait, which took me over 2 hours to do, cz my sweet little doggie wouldn't cooperate with me, is doing a lot worse than the accidental letter one, which was pretty "easy" I think.
Voters voters, what are you all doing?
