Yeah, I knew the subject would get attention. ;-)
I just wanted to restate the rules for the Accidental Letters challenge for those that are still voting:
The shape of letters can be found in nature AND IN OTHER OBJECTS. Create an interesting photograph containing SOMETHING WHICH HAS THE SHAPE OF A LETTER BUT WASN'T INTENDED TO BE ONE.
Ok - this means it can be man-made, but not intended to be a letter. I consider L brackets, Z braces, etc. not intended to be letters because they are not made for assembling a sign or that sort of thing.
Anyway - many people continue to think the letter has to be found in nature. So everyone who voted thinking that, GO BACK and revise your votes. ;-)

You are correct. I also correct myself from an earlier post in which I agreed with someone else. I attempted to dismiss items made which are named after letters. I now see my folly:
Take the A frame. This pattern is not made to be used in the alphabet. It exist because of the economy of strength. The same applies to "S" hooks. When have we seen an "S" hook used to spell out something? Look at the "S" hook and tell me it is not a super natural invention. The creators did not at all referenced the alphabet.
So, yes, you are 100 % correct. The challenge includes any formation whether made by nature or men. To ignore this and to vote down anything but nature's accidental is a perversive act.
The challenge does not prohibit the arrangement of accidentals into a cohesive meaning.
However, from earlier threads I note that some folks have made up their mind and will proceed in their path. Somebody also commented that the nature latters were the most boring because of the similarity. However, this is not so as there is beauty in both nature and man made. |

This is great. Just look at all of the attention that "Letters" is getting. Now so many more have gone back and looked at them again and revised their scores. This discussion was exactly what was needed to get people to really look at the photos and not just a 2 second glance while pushing the mouse key on 5. Isn't it great how nature uses the laws of physics to help invent items of use and strength that resemble a letter! Far too much time is used in microscopically determining if it meets the challenge. I believe it must do so and the photo must be more than just a snap shot picture album composition .... most are very well done. For those who really don't try give them all "1's"!

Hmmm... must still be some perverts out there - it didn't change my score.
...not that that was my goal or anything. ;-) |

Regardless of how the letter is formed (unintentionally), I think it's pretty amazing to see how many show up naturally in nature. Those are the coolest ones! Kudos to those that took the time to hunt them out.

I have to admit that when I read the challenge that I thought or assumed it was supposed to do with nature,,or something that was created by nature,,but after re reading it a few times it finally clicked that anything is nature in essence if that makes sense,,,I think there were alot of really great pictures out there,,,I will also say that this is helping me to open my eyes and really look at things with a different perspective,,,Truly seeing the beauty in everything. |
