Has anyone else noticed that the 20D shutter sounds 5 times louder that the 300D.
I know the review said it was louder but I̢۪m afraid it is going to distract the wildlife I photograph.
Any other people find this?

That's odd. I just got a 10D and I really like the sound of the click on it - it's quieter and quicker than the click on my Rebel. You'd think the 10D and 20D would sound the same. |

I think it might make candids and animal pics a little harder

Found on Google:
"It's loud if you use it during a funeral service."
"It's quiet if you use it during an F1 race."
"It's not loud. It's just not quiet." |

What's the issue here? there's a "Volume" setting, isn't there?

Non SLR cameras simulate the shutter sound. That's why you can turn it down. It comes from little speakers. A Dslr camera makes sounds because the mirror inside switches up and down. |

Back in the day, "quiet" SLRs were "slow" SLRs. As a rule of thumb, the faster the mirror action the more noise it made. Is the 20D faster than the 10D in returning to a ready state? That might explain it. Dampening slows things down.
Robt.

Yeah, it's louder than the 300, and the 1DII as it happens, but then quite a few reviews have mentioned this, and I knew it was going to be noisy when I got it..
My old film SLR's both made more noise though, so I'm not complaining..

I've used my 20D for wildlife shooting quite a bit, several thousand images. I don't think the shutter's sound is a problem. It's louder than other cameras I've used but I have never noticed any reaction to the sound in the birds or animals I'm trying to photograph. I suppose it could be in an extremely quiet situation, but normally you will be using a telephoto lens that puts you at some distance from the subject. Don't underestimate your subjects, most of the time they are already aware of your presence anyway.

You can always get a Soundblimp. Incredible soundproofing for your camera. But they come at a price: $800 for the body enclosure and another $200 for the lens tube. The photographer's on tv show and movie sets all use them. |

When I upgraded to the 20D from the 10D, I also noticed the difference. In fact, my husband was in one of the weddings I shot last year and commented on it to me afterwards. However, no one else at the wedding seemed to notice it. It's funny, though, because he and I were just talking about this very same subject this morning. |

it certainly is louder. when I'm taking a pic it sounds like a blaster from the Star Wars movies. |

Hi-ho,
Another of my two bits on this topic...
I just shot an event yesterday. Another photog. was there using a 20D along side me. (shooting for a different customer)
It was a formal open air event, with public speakers addressing troops and assembled public + dignitaries... So it wasn't the quietest event, but not noisy either..
I was not really aware of the noise of the other 20D shooter, even when he was only a few meters away from me. In fact the only time I heard him clearly at all was when he said 'snap' when he saw we were using identical kit at one stage, same camera, grip, lens, and flash. :-).
If I saw his flash go off and I was near him I could hear the camera, but you didn't notice the noise above the background sounds if you were not really looking for it.
There was also a chap there taking pics with a D70, and although not a pro he was quite often getting closer to the 'action' than the general public. For all I know his camera was turned off, I didn't hear it make a sound once, although he was shooting without a flash so there was not visual clue.. And his shots probably suffered for the lack of flash as it happens, the light was difficult for most of the morning.
As for the noise from my camera.. During some of the quite bits it sounds like a sonic boom if you've got your face mushed up against the back of it. :-).
Cheers, Me.
