You're quite open in your interpretation, It think but then end with the post here.
I would ask then, why call the challenge "Minimalism" if it has nothing to do with minimalism?
I thought this was an interesting analogy if there was a side rule to a Pet's Challenge that added "...but keep in mind, Pet's have four legs" or "...Pet's have two legs". That narrows things down a bit, kind of like the size rule. It would piss of fish owners, I'd bet. Well then don't call it a Pet's Challenge then....call it a "Two legged Pet's Challenge. So here we are with a Minimalism Challenge with a very narrow definition that rules out Minimalist concepts??? It doesn't make a lot of sense but it's cool with me. Buyer beware.
I really enjoy these discussions because I find them thought provoking. My aim in posting is to broaden my own vision and to help open up other possibilities...unseen. I miss things ALL the time so for me these conversations are enlightening.

Look up the meaning of minimalism. Then forget it and read the second line of the challenge where it truly describes that the subject must occupy a small amount of real estate. The second line is truly the spirit of the challenge. |

I knew I'd not do well but this is the worst yet. :(
and btw, everyone is gripping at the meaning of minimalism when it is described right there in the submission details. Anyone that detracts from that either can't follow directions or doesn't want to and will suffer the wrath of the voters that did. It doesn't matter what the challenge is called really cause the site host set up the description and that is what should be shot. If they call it Dogs but in the description say "shoot anything BUT a dog" who is going to get the votes? The person that follows the directions or the one that sees the title and shoots dogs without regards for the directions? My submission is doing poorly not because I didn't read the description and just shoot anything but because I didn't plan the shot well enough and it left too much out there for imagination.
edited to add---> It is the same with the rock paper scissors challenge, some saw that it said have one or more of the items and followed that, most it appears saw it say include ALL the items and marked down on the photos that didn't. The details spelled it out very simply but there are those that wish to see it how they want to.
(btw I mean photograph dogs, I would never condone the actual shooting of a dog unless it is attacking or something.)

I did and I read every definition posted. I don't mean to be disputatious and I hope my tone doesn't come off that way.
I do understand that the spirit of the challenge is in the the second line but have a hard time ignoring the challenge title. As I said the spirit is fine but the BOTH title combined with the the second line makes for a much more interesting Challenge IMHO and since the title IS there, it should count for something

I completely agree with you.

You shoot half a face and the lighting is so that it favors the eye. You shoot an ear wearing a very small earring. The subject here is the earring. The important thing is not to construed the background as the subject of a portrait.
Look, this challenge has many interpretations and to say that over half of the images miss the point is to hint that maybe the judge has missed the meaning and spirit of the challenge.
It is best just to vote your conscience and keep quiet for other folks with a wider understanding will rush to correct you. The challenge is not minimalism as the word inplies. It has nothing to do with minimalism but rather the space alloted to the subject matter. |

I now have comments stating " A good example of minimalism", "Meets the challenge" and "doesn't meet the challenge". Many different interpretations.
This score bites.

I'm way out of ribbon range, but it's nice to have a score that doesn't completely suck for a change. Of course, now that I said that it's going to go down a point in a matter of minutes (just you watch!) but it's fun to see a relatively decent number.
I'm really digging all the comments even more, though. Fun fun! |

Its funny, I think the definition of minimalism, and what DP defined as what they wanted is two different things. This may come interesting to some people.
min-i-mal-ism, as defined in New Lexicon Websters Dictionary of the English Language.
Abstract artform (esp. sculpture) that eliminates illusion and embellishment and emphasizes structure (usu. simple geometric forms) and color field; coined by critic Barbara Rose of work by Larry Bell,, Donald Judd, Robert Morris also minimal art, redctivisim, rejectivism |

I barely met the challenge...if I did at all, I'm not actually sure but I do have some very strong minimalist themes in my image, more than most, in fact. Not obvious enough to sway popular opinion, however.
About half of my comments say that I didn't meet the challenge but are still complimentary and they're probably right to some degree. I pushed it a bit too far but I'm really glad that people like the image and see exactly why I entered it.

Good luck from a newbie too! Although I'm already on my 3rd submission. Until now I've received approximately 10 comments per entry but of course, the number of comments can vary from case to case. |

The first challenge I've entered in about a year, so I'm pretty made up with my score so far. I think I've only entered 3 challenges before, and my highest was probably about the 5/10 mark.
There's tonnes of photos to vote for though... is the voting fair in the sense that it gives you random photos to vote for, or do those later in the list risk receiving less votes??? I suppose it all averages out anyway. |

AVG Comments does vary from challenge to challenge. If you're interested in that sort of thing, go here: DPC Challenge History and browse the last column.
BTW, that's my score you've got! I predicted a perfect 5.0000 and around 42 votes had a 4.8???--now, with twice the votes I'm flirting with a 5.3!
(The more people argue about what the challenge means the more my score increases! ARGUE AWAY!) |

Crazy how huge a tenth of a point seems when you've lost it. Stop voting me down, people! I have a pattern of low scores I need to break! ;) |

I wish it wasn't possibly to vote on thumbnails only, I wish the voting bar was ONLY on the bottom of the photo and the whole thing had to load first.
My photo is nothing much at all in the thumbnail, but stunning when you see the whole thing.
I bet it would be doing a whole lot better if people had to actually LOOK at it first before they hit a number and move on. |

? I don't think you can vote on just the thumbnails. It has to open to get the voting bar. |
