This is a first draft for a cover page of a magazine/flyer portfolio I want to do... What do you think? I trust you guys to be very critical and picky. So don't be shy to throw 'em away.

Left a comment on the picture. Hope it helps.

I like the long, vertical crop of the building and the two smaller photos. I also like the layout and the font you've chosen. The only thing is the photo of the girl looks a bit odd somehow to the rest. Maybe a different color caste? pure b&w maybe? Maybe even scrap that photo and insert a few others to see the effect.

You said you wanted comments - apologies if following sounds hard, but the following represents my opinion!

IMO:

Font is very distracting: if you are going for classy, I would choose a simple elegant font.

Long photo on left is too long for me: the bottom does not line up with the middle photo, and the RH photo is so dark at the bottom that the LH photo does not appear to line up with that either.

Middle photo of eyes stands out partly because of the strong border - it is the only picture with a border, and this looks a bit odd to me. I would prefer some consistency to keep the images together as a collection.

You have colour, monochrome, one predominantly white and one predominantly black photo. Again - this does not tie this together as a collection. I might try and tie the photos together a bit more: maybe slightly different choices. Middle photo of eyes is most out of sync with the others, I think.

I am not sure what "PhotoFolio" means - I would use a more recognisable phrase for the kind of exhibition you are putting on.

If I were doing the same, I might consider using one large photo on LHS, name at top (slightly smaller and simpler font than yours), with remaining photos in smaller square boxes on RHS (each the same size), details slightly smaller and either fitted around photos on RHS or on bottom right of image (powerful positioning - where the eye naturally comes to rest).

There is no address to say where it is taking place.

Further to my comments, maybe something a bit more like this:

As for the titel PhotoFolio, I did'nt want to call it PortFolio since it won't be that big (4 pages) in form of a flyer (in Adobe). Plus I tought I was original... Sometimes, you have to "wear" your ideas a bit long enough too really judge them...

Thanks for the detailed impressions and tips. Some of it I allready knew (or at least doubt about it) and some I didn't realise. Like the tips about the colors... Being color-blind (seriously) is a bitch. Thanks for the "Heads-up!"

Hehe... Cool. But it's too... Sober in my taste. Alltough I like the right single column, that's good. Plus the pictures on it, I'm not so sure... I allways resized my pics for web, never in print format, so a lot of them I'm just re PhotoShopping them in their original format. I don't have them all yet. That was actually a little break fun I had with some pictures allready in all in the same format.

maybe I am too used to seeing sober exhibition leaflets! Sometimes it is good to fit the mould (people automatically know what to expect), other times to break it (people get intrigued).

I would not necessarily have chosen those pics to go together.

Hope it goes well, in any case!!

Seems like you got plenty critique on your work. I am no graphic design expert by any means but I'd like to tell you what I do like about it...

I like how my eyes move around it. The visual path starts at the bottom where the yellow light is, then moves up the building to the point...the building is like an arrow pointing to your name. The eye movement continues onto the right column where you come to another line that points to the next section...the line I'm talking about is the woman's right leg which slopes down. this eye movement continues on down to the very bottom.

I agree with legalbeagle about having consistency. That photo with border doesn't quite fit in well. I like how it looks in legal's version.

I hope you don't mind, legal, if I express the following opinion about your version...i don't like it as much because when my eyes get to the right column, the movement is broken up because of the B&W photo. It stands out so much that the the 1st photo of the woman tends to be skipped over. I think this doesn't happen in the original because the top photo is much bigger, so the smaller B&W isn't so overpowering. It's somewhat balanced. I also think there's too much negative space...

But like I said, I'm no expert, I'm just an amateur. I apologize if I sound like an idiot in any way. I'm usually not comfortable giving critiques...

Peace...

Quite the contrary! Your observations we're very interesting, again, it was a complement of stuff I had allready noticed. Very interesting comments. Thanks a lot!

There should another "Magazine Challenge", this time with fonts allowed... It would also be interesting to read/write comments with different things to look at.

There's an extra space between the G and the R in "Graphisme" that needs fixing big-time.
