I have to shoot a class of 100 and I went into the gym with 2 students and with my stock lens that came with my D70, I realized I could easily get them all and get a decent shot. Using my tripod I had the kids stand where they were in my shot,(either side of the lens, from there I adjusted my distance until I could get a shot and be able to see and identify each student. Only took a few minutes to get the distance figured out. From there you just have to get them arranged by height and size..If you have bleachers then you should have no problem.
I would also snap a few shots in the area you want to take the picture and see how the lighting is.. Time of day etc. Outside is usually easier than the horrible lighting in a school.
Good Luck
