As the thread title says really.
I just took some out today, but I discovered that I have to pay 25% excess if my stuff gets stolen while I'm in Italy. That would end up being around £700, which is just ridiculous.
I'm ideally looking for a broker, but I will try any insurance companies. I can't put it on my home insurance, as I'm limited to £1,000 away from home. |

I can't actually recommend them as I don't use them, but I keep getting leaflets for these people in Practical Photography ...

Aaarrggghhh... those are the guys I bought my insurance from. I bought a copy of AP later today, read the leaflet and discovered the small print. 25% excess is ludicrous. Thanks though!
Anyone know anyone else? |

Ouch! Sorry about that!
A bit of digging brought up this site ...

According to the FAQ there's NO excess, but they are more expensive upfront.
I'd be interested to hear from anybody who has taken specific camera insurance too as I'm relying on home insurance at the moment. |

What about add-ons to your homeowner's policy? There are special riders for jewelry and I would suspect for camera equipment as well. It would be an extra charge as basic homeowner's insurance can be quite limited.
If you're using photography as a business you may have to look into a business policy.

Bobster, check your house contents policy again. With many the limit is not £1000 total but the maximum per any item. So the body would be up to £100 and each lens up to £1000 and so on.
We have added our cameras and laptop to our home policy which does require an extra payment for each high value item but is less than a whole separate insurance policy.

Have you approached your home contents insuere most Large companies will cover your gear .I get excellent cover from Sun Alliance. ans very good on claims as well. Usually only $nz100. excess. Any item over $1500 has to be listed on an schedule, that includes jewellery and large ticket items .

Thanks for all your advice,
I went back to my home insurance providers, and I AM covered! The camera and lenses count as seperate items, so everything is hunky dory.
They cover up to £3,700 of equipment away from the home. I got them to check with the underwriters, and they even cover all my camera gear in a security tent at Glastonbury Festival without it being under lock and key, which no other company would do. My excess is £25!
I paid an extra £4 a month on top of my existing policy to cover for accidental damage. Cover abroad is already there.
I can't emphasise how great my insurance company is, it's thanks to them that I have my Minolta 7D...
I had an expensive keyboard stolen from a theatre some time after I played in a show there, except I was really casual and left it there for months after the show without checking it was okay. The musical director told me after the show that it would be locked up and I trusted him. Due to it being one of those things that I just put off, and put off again because I'd put it off for so long, I didn't report it to the police or claim on the insurance until over a year after it got stolen. My insurance company put it straight through and were unbelievably helpful. They even agreed not to replace it with another keyboard, but with a camera! So if you need insurace, go fo Abbey Insurance... I can't recommend them highly enough. |
