Well, I bought my camera in early April 2004, problems showed up by July 2005, I shipped it off to Nikon with a letter asking for them to cover it under warranty because it seems to be such a common problem that it is a manufacturing issue. I shipped it to Nikon in Los Angeles on the 4th of Aug. By 8th I received an estimate in the mail: "This repair is not covered under warranty". As kshodges mentioned, rank B2 repair - minor repair, major parts replaced. $210 later, UPS has my camera delivered on the 24th of Aug. I've read about others getting theirs covered under warranty even though the camera is out of warranty and I am curious if I was charged because I mentioned my purchase date in the letter. I wondered if they would have covered it except I didn't leave them a way around it. They couldn't say "It's about a year old, close enough" because they had written proof that it wasn't. Just speculation.

The invoice listed the following:
B2
Service Repair Rank B2
Write Up
Repair SC 201117
RPL METERING FPC
CLN CCD
ADJ AUTO FOCUS OPERATION
CDK FLASH OPERATION
IMAGE CTL PCB
GENERAL CHECK & CLEAN

Then it listed the serial number and the parts I did and didn't ship with it.

So, start to finish, it took about three weeks, $200, and too many challenges.

ok, not to rub it in, but WOOOOOOO HOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!

i just got a letter from Nikon (postal mail...sheesh) that said that my cam's issues WERE covered under warranty. it's also rated as a B2 "Moderate Repair : Major Parts Replaced"

no word on when it is coming back. status is "in shop."

i was going to try and find a copy of the letter i sent in the box with the cam, but i must have deleted it. sorry. i'm positive that i put my purchase date in the letter, but i also registered the cam when i bought it, so they should KNOW that it was out of warranty.

it REALLY sucks that they are being so inconsistent about this. i was fully prepared to launch into an anti-corporate tirade if they gave me any grief about paying for the repair. i sent mine into the NY center instead of California -- i wonder if that had anything to do with it?

hopelessoptimist -- if i were you, i would get on the horn and pitch SUCH a bitch about this. i'd also call your credit card company and dispute the repair charge to Nikon. that's no cost to you and that will certainly get their attention.

i'm interested to see how this plays out. my cam never did actually DIE, but was certainly showing all of the same symptoms -- it would just eventually turn on after 30 seconds or so...

Well, that's good to hear!

I, too, am hoping a lot of these issues have been resolved for the D70s. I've been super happy with it so far, but with football season starting, I'll be shooting thousands and thousands of shots. I'll be holding my breath each game, I guess...!

i never intended to hijack this thread with my own personal experience, but perhaps it's helpful to some of you guys out there that are having this same problem.

the cam came back today via UPS next-day air. it took 13 days from shipping to receipt.

the manifest that came with the cam indicates they did:

RPL METERING FPC
ADJ AUTO FOCUS OPERATION (i'm assuming this is the back focus problem, although i never really noticed it -- watch... my shots will be lots better now LOL)
CLN CCD (which i needed, but i think they do automatically anyway)
GENERAL CHECK & CLEAN (the outside looks brand-spankin' new).

all-in-all, my experience with Nikon support was very positive. the only thing that i wish could have been done better would be faster notification of the repair. i got a letter via postal mail on tuesday telling me what was going on, and the cam came back on friday. if this were a repair that i would have to pay for and had to approve, this delay would have been unbearable.

hopefully by me relating my experience, others out there can get their issues resolved in a reasonable amount of time and, assuming it's the green light of death, under warranty. :) let me know if you have any questions!

from fredmiranda.com forums:

The problem seems to be the "Metering FPC" board. As I understand it the first models, prior to Sept 04 or there abouts, had a connector on the board. There was a high failure rate on this and they later replaced the connector with a soldered connection.

i guess that's the RPL METERING FPC portion of my repair. that was the biggie. mine just happened to be loose enough that i could still sometimes use the cam -- others have come completely disconnected, causing the BGLOD.

It happened to me yesterday! I freaked out then I called Nikon. I am glad thay are good with their service. Fixed for free but without a camera for up to a month. Do I smell recall on early d70's? We'll see.

Nikon Advisory: While only a limited number of D70 cameras are affected by this advisory, if (1) when a memory card is inserted, your D70's memory card access lamp blinks, locking camera operations and preventing operation, or (2) with no memory card inserted, the camera will not turn on despite the battery indicator showing a fully charged battery, Nikon Inc. will service it free of charge.

Alright, so there is this huge car show in town yesterday that I normally miss, but remembered this year. I got up early yesterday morning, the sun was perfect, so I got around because ti was a perfect day for photographing custom cars.

So I grab my D70 toss the flash card in it and turn it on to format the card and the read/write light is flashing. I wait a bit thinking it's just reading the card, but it doesn't stop. I shut off the camera and the light keeps flashing. Pull the battery for a few minutes, replace it and the same thing. Try a new flash card, same thing. Try the reset button, but that does nothing either. OK, I'm freaking out now.

So here are the sysmptoms...

- read/write light flashing whether the camera is on or off
- if I push the Menu button the LCD display just flashes once
- nothing is showing up on the control panel display
- changing batteries, flash card, or doing a reset makes no difference

Any of you Nikon folks have any ideas?

I'm off to start scouring the Internetfor ideas, since I now have my Internet access back, after a dump truck went down the alley beside my house and ripped all the cables out of my house. Talk about a crappy weekend!

Thanks! [/quote]//www.nikonusa.com/template.php?cat=1

It sounds to me like the blinking green light problem. I've had it myself. Unfortunately there is nothing you can do yourself to fix it. Do you have a backup camera you can use to shoot cars with?

The best thing to do is to send the camera to Nikon (instructions on how to do so are here -- click the first link on the page). The repair takes about 2 weeks and should be done at no charge - I think Nikon has even publicly stated this to be true.

I am super scared now!!!! I have had mine since May 2004 and I have somewhere between 20 and 30 thousand shots on it. And this is my busy time of year!!!! All I need is for it to die on me now!

Is there any cost to send it to Nikon for service if nothing wrong has happened yet? I want to make sure that nothing happens.

If it hasn't had the problem yet, there may be a charge (there is of course a chance it won't happen at all). I'd suggest calling Nikon tech support. If you explain to them your situation they might be able to work something out for you.

Somebody dug up my old thread and quoted it in there. Camera has been fixed for awhile now. I got it repaired free before they announced the problem.

Lorrie - Like Ben said, I would talk to your local Nikon dealer and see what they can do. Mine worked through his rep and had mine taken care of.
