Went to a work function on Friday night with my camera bag. My wife insisted that I leave the camera alone for 'five minutes' so that we could have a dance together. Came back to the table and the entire camera bag (Sony 727, 5x128 memory sticks, Flash, Pentax slr and 2 lenses ) was missing. At first I thought someone from work was playing a prank but after an hour my worst nightmare became a reality - my bag had been stolen. I know all these people and it was a closed function so other than the DJ there was no 'outsiders' there. I just can not belieive that someone I work with - would steal my hobby -
Thank goodness for insurance!!!

Man.. if it was a closed function, I would have gotten the DJ to announce that something was missing, and that nobody would be allowed to leave until the item was recovered.. so, if someone had something that didn't belong to them, now would be the time to return it to the rightful place.. no questions asked.

My condolences.
Sad part is, you will be looking at EVERYONE differently now, and even if it mysteriously returned, the doubt will always be there.

Sorry to hear that!

That's a bummer :/

Used to work at a large medical facility where we had a problem with stealing (we all had a pretty good idea who it was) and it does make for working with them difficult.

Hope you are able to retrieve it back (somehow) or get a new one!

I went to a photography seminar back in March and one of the speakers mentioned that camera theft was on the rise. Ever since then I am almost paranoid about being out shooting and having someone demand my camera ... the thought is definitely not a good feeling. I do not know what I would do if it actually happened...

Sorry to hear of your misfortune!

I have nightmares sometimes about my camera being stolen...
Sucks that it actually happened to you.
I'm pretty protective over mine, always asked to leave it behind but nuh uh, nooooo way, don't think so!

I hate to hear about that. And to know it's a person at your work place, thats bad.
Wouldn't it be nice if you could go to your boss and let him/her know what happened and then set up the thief. The boss could say, in a meeting, I need a original picture on disk or Cd of something for a promotion. The person with the best picture wins $50.00. Well if the thief has not sold it yet he/she may take the picture since $50 would look good to them. Then you and your boss can look at the EXIF data and see if it matches your pictures EXIF date. Busted!!!!

All risk specified insurance (South Africa) Costs me R110 a month (about 11Pounds or $20) But thats why I pay for an event such as this -

Couldn't it have been a waitress/waiter rather than someone you worked with?

You need a personal articles policy -- it's often a rider to homeowner's or renter's coverage. It's the same type of policy you would get to cover jewelry or computer equipment. In Pennsylvania it costs about $30/year.

Wow, quite cheap. So you can insure ALL of your camera equipment for only $30/year? That's an excellent deal.

If you have your camera insured under your homeowners/renters policy, make sure that you can prove what you own (keep receipts) and that in no way can they say it is for business use.

If it is for business use, the insurance company does not have to pay anything.

oh how much I understand you, you can not even imagine!
that's the worst feeling of all. Comin back to work, look at people and having to guess who did that...

About a year and a half ago, my camera (nikon coolpix 4500) was stolen while at work too.
In my case, the guy who took it, didn't take the bag. Oh no! He brought a heavy rock and put it in the camera's case, so that it would be as heavy as it should be, and I won't notice the camera was taken. Imagine that...
Well, I had to buy a new camera because even though it was clearlky someone from the office I work in, we could not get any proof as of who the theef was.
Personally - I know who he is. Or at least, I think I do.
But I can not proove that, and I have to work with this person and act normally to him.

That's the most disguasting thing anyone could do IMO. I mean, how can he look me in the eye afterwards?
People...
