Welcome to dpc Paul. The macaw is a fine picture and probably would have done fairly well in the Birds challenge. In your owl shot the whites around it's face look a little over-exposed, you've lost detail there. I glanced over the shots you've posted to your portfolio, you are going to be fine here.

I only had a couple of images remotely worthy, and in the end decided that both were too boring to submit.

This one, a scissor-tailed flycather, was my most willing model, but he refused to get out from behind the leaves.

This guy, a meadowlark, has been recently displaced from his home due to hay-cutting.

Bird photography is demanding work, and I simply didn't get to devote the time to it I would have liked for the challenge.

Thanks for the heads up Zoomdak - I fixed my thumbnails!

Michael, you didnt submit because you thought those were boring??!? Wow.

Paul, welcome to DPC! Love the owl photo. Taken this week?

It seems you removed my post about a picture that is not currently in voting?! Although the subject is the same it is a completely different picture alltogether! There are no train-signals on my current entry. I find it rather rude to just completely delete the whole post, not just the image itself..

I'm quite pleased with my entry, but I had a hard time deciding what image to enter, here are a few outtakes that didn't make the cut. How would these have done?

One of my outttakes.

This owl is nice. The cormorant is not quite sharp enough around the
head for my taste, great pose though. The background does not help
the raptor image.

There are to many captive bird photos is this challenge.

I kinda agree with Jakobs comments about Beamsclan's pictures. Nice- but not as sharp as could be- f/5.6 ?

Jakob,
We get what we get during the challenge week. Here are three "wild" pictures that just missed the challenge week. What do you all think?

Jakob,

Thanks for the comments. I agree that many of the challenge entries are probably captive birds, but not everyone can get out in the wild during the challenge week. My above outtakes and my challenge entry are of wild birds.

went to the zoo, took 207 pictures. Had it narrowed down to three (two really, the lorikeet one I just liked but knew it wouldn't do well). I'm currently at a 5.8 in score.

06/14/2005 07:18:50 PM · #67
I thought about entering one of these two, but went for something simpler but without the sharpness problems. With a current score of 5.01, I'm thinking maybe I made a mistake.

Edit: Actually, after seeing what some people chose not to enter, I'm not sure I should have entered at all.

Sorted your thumnail JohannesFrank and left this comment.

Really like this, Love the dark sky, soft clouds and the motion blur. I would have scored this very high in the bird challenge.

This was the only other shot I had contemplated entering in place of the entry I went with, at the end.. and it was a tough decision.

I'm happy with my entry for sure.. (49th place, a 6+ score).. but given some of the shots above me.. I'm thinking this might have done well too.

It´s fun to see that photographers from Iceland have been taking most of the ribbons on the last challenges ;)

my entry was not going so well..most of the critiques were about not being an interesting composition , the centered position and the bars framing the bird were disliked..i dont really agree with them ..but thats okay i can understand the critiques
i just was wondering if the first image from these outtakes (named it 'abstract') would have done significantly better??
