Just stumbled on this (stupid spam!)...

I'm not endorsing it or anything, just thought it's a hefty prize for anyone interested.

It's basically a classic bait and switch -- lure people in with the promise of a chance to win a big prize and then after thousands have submitted their works (and more or less agreeing that by submitting, there are some rights granted to Poetry.com) send out glowing letters to tell them their wonderful work has been selected for publication in a Poetry "Anthology". Been there .. done that.
The Anthology is a massive tome of the coffee table variety and your poem will be somewhere inside -- and it's touted as some reference expected to be featured in libraries, poetry collections, etcetera, etcetera, etcetera ...
But .. and here's where the line is tugged to bury the hook ... you'll be allowed to reserve a copy for yourself for the advance order price of $49.95 or something on that order. You're IN the damn thing but you still "get" to pay $50 clams to own it.
I don't know that they don't actually award a prize -- they may well do so and some fortunate soul would be very happy to have it. But it's more a way to collect material from people for a book they then sell to the very people who contributed .. not to mention certificates and lord knows what other sort of 'valuable mementos" of your fame . . .

O'this site is very similar to picture.com. I have an elderly family member that got ripped off with the book, promises to put them on TV, trips, a bad thing.
I will say if you want the book and have the $ for it the it's okay but be aware of their constant request for more money. |

Over in the poetry website world, these people are the laughingstock of all laughingstocks. It's a vanity press, plain and simple. They actually DO pay out, though; there's never a shortage of people wanting to see themselves "in print", so they have a terrific cash flow and they pay their prizes. The quality of the poetry in the books, though, is truly execrable with a few exceptions. At least from a "professional" writer's perspective.
Your opinion may vary.

| Yeah, when I was in college I submitted to this site. I knew something was wrong when every work I submitted won some sort of "distinguished honor". I think my stuff is still there actually, since they provide no means to delete your work once you submit it! |
