Okay, so a few weeks ago I asked for help about shooting some drag racing in this thread.
Thanks to everyone for the tips, I shot the event and followed up with the track who said "We get all of our photo exclusively from one company". So I emailed that company and sent them some sample pics and....and....!!! I spoke with them on the phone last night and they want me to do some work for them on weekends at the track!!
I start tomorrow. They sell prints at the track and online and I get 50% of all print sales, keep the rights to the photos, and get full access to any of the events. Apparently, on a real good weekend I can expect up to $1000 commission shooting an event! Wooooohooooo!!
He also said that their business has been growing and there could be a lot of offshoot business from this (go-karts, equestrian events, etc.)
Now, I also have a few questions regarding this:
1) I've been asked to shoot with their Fuji cameras that take Nikkor lenses...anything I need to know about the difference between shooting Canon and Nikon?
2) All of the guys at the track had flashes...I'm used to shooting 99% natural light. What power should the flash be for some mid-afternoon fill light? Is that a stupid/incomplete question?
3) Can I get a "Wooooohooooo!!" from you guys for my first paid job?

Excellent oportunity! Wooohooo!!! And you get to try new camera and lens. Is that good or what?
Some people say that Nikon has a of the camera image less sharp. But nott for all the models. Some complain that regarding the D70 and 20D. For what I've heard the opposite happens with the 1s MkII and the D2X. So I gess you'll get your hands on a S2 or S3 pro (I wish I could also). I think what probably will happen is that you'll be pretty soon converted into Nikon :)

Yes, Nuno...it's the S2Pro I'll be using tomorrow. I've never used one but I studied the review on dpreview.com to get an idea of the controls. Seems fairly intuitive from what I could gather.
I look forward to using that equipment as I was going to upgrade to a 20d but now I will wait until the end of the summer so I can use the Nikon-esque stuff to see where I want to head in the future.
Edit: I just saw that the S2 is 1.5x crop factor so I will need to take into account that I'm losing a bit on length with the lenses (compared to the 1.6x that I'm used to)

Oooh, finally, a camera with AF Servo! Sweet...I look forward to that, as that is one of the Drebel's biggest downfalls.

A friend of mine, that is a professional photographer, uses a S3pro for his fashion stuff, and a 1ds for sports!
What reason, he says that the Fuji is VERY slow for sports! The canon and nikon cameras are much faster for it! You might want to have ur own camera with you and do some back to back shooting, with both cameras!
I shot mine with the 350d xt |

Yeah, I'll have to give the S2 a try...part of the agreement is that I use their cameras and equipment to keep everything standard as far as file sizes/names and everything go.
He said I could bring my camera along to take shots after I had gotten what he needs for the day...we'll see...

"Wooooohooooo!!" Mine maybe late,,,, but it's just as loud! You rock!! That's soooooooooo super. I feel I had a small part in it just cause I responded to your first post with my tiny opinion! It's soooo great that you followed up on that, alot of people, including me would have problem just dropped it when they were told that the track only worked with one company. Kudos for you for taking that extra step that paid off!! |

Wow, what a neat weekend...this event was much much smaller than the one I shot before from the stands (which was an IHRA event). It was a local event but there is nothing like shooting from right beside the track!
I get the DVD with originals later this week so I'll have to wait to show you a few choice shots...

***************** Update: August 4th *****************
Okay, this was about a month ago but I've shot a few weekends since. Business hasn't been great for the print guy I'm working for and I've made a little bit of money (more than $100, less than $1000) but more importantly I've made some contacts since and have some drag racing photos to show for it.
I may be on the verge of a really sweet opportunity in drag racing...but I'll have to wait and see how it turns out. If you go to //www.mikeschneider.ca and go to "Races" you can see samples from the past few races. These are the "recent work" photos I'm sending to an editor that may be interested in having me do some work for him...we'll see!
Enjoy!
