With all the discussions and arguing going on in here about whether or not people "get" the challenges and whether the interpretations of the challenges are valid or not, maybe we could try something different once... We could have a "defined in advance" or "recreate this description" challenge..
Something like : "Take a picture of a house. There is a car parked in front, but we have to see the front door."
or: "People waiting for the bus, but shot from the opposite street corner, there must be no cars in the shot."
You know what I mean? It might make for an interesting challenge, since we'd all have the "same subject" in our pictures, we would somehow all start at the same "level"...
Just an idea I had, tell me what you think.

I like that idea. However, the part about taking people waiting for the bus, I have a little problem with. I hate to take pictures of strangers. I always feel like a dork, especially when they see me taking it. Anyway, that's just me. I do like the idea of taking a specific thing, however, it does take away the creativity of a good photographer. It would have to be something where the photographer can meet all the requirements but have room to be creative. Therefore, we would be back to the challenges as they are.

Of course those two examples were just that, examples. It could be still life or anything...

Well, maybe this would be more of a challenge for the "technical quality is more important" types, since the rest of the challenges are mostly for the "let me be creative" ones... And anyways, if you're that good a photographer, you'll find a way to make anything interesting... Right?

Well not automatically. Maybe the "defined challenges" could be a little more fuzzy defined then, like "Take a picture of your Church/School/Workplace." or "Take a picture of your street-name sign"... They still force the subject while leaving enough room for creativity.

One of the things I like about a challenge is the people who see things in a totally different way than I. Sometimes their idea doesn't resonate with me. Other times it's, "Wow! I never would have thought of that." ...And then I suddenly see with new eyes...
If a technical merits only challenge is what people want, then how about a 1 foot grey square against a white wall, lit from the upper left, shot from 4 feet away, directly opposite the square? That way no wiggle room for the "prettiness" of the picture swaying votes. Although it does seem rather dreary, it would demonstrate who it the best photo technician.

I agree with PhotosByAyme, I like to see the different ways people inturpret the challenge and for those with extra creativity I'll give them extra points, my favorite example of someones creativity is jenarom's Alien Landscape picture. Along with a lot of other peoples. This weeks challenge has some good creative reflective pictures. I wouldn't want to see 200 pictures that are pretty much the same.

I think this would be a neat excercise. Though I wouldn't want this to be the new method for all challenges I wouldn't mind one this way. I think it would be interesting.

OOh let me clarify .. i DO LIKE the idea of having a list of items as the exercise ... just not ONE item and shoot it in the same manner as everyone else :)

Hows about we go with some structure like... the picture must have lines that intersect... or something like that... i dunno, must have 4 lines that go horizontally and also must include a round object... |
