I can understand that you do not like pet pictures popping up in about every contest... but this was ONE CONTEST were pet pictures ARE 100% justified. And even HERE you feel the need to throw the lowest possible scores in the face of every one who "dares" to post such a pet pic? Shame on you! You are out of line and you're being way too harch in your judgements!
I took a look at your pics. Seems like quite a few were converted to some sort of B/W and/or sepia look. You know what? I think I don't like the fact that everyone uses these popular effects to boost their scores, no matter what contest. After all, there's nothing "special" about those pics anyway. The effect is as easy to create in PhotoShop as it is to take a picture of a pet, right? I think from now on I will rate every B/W or sepia pic with a 1. In fact, I'm even gonna do that if the challenge is something like "old picture" or something.
Would you like that?
Maybe the above is not the best example, but you know where I'm getting at... |
I guess it was not clear enough. I did not interpret pets as fauna.
And since this one keeps getting brought up- Fauna: 1. (used with a sing. or pl. verb) Animals, especially the animals of a particular region or period, considered as a group. 2. A catalog of the animals of a specific region or period. If you want to be technical, it says ANIMALS. Notice the S on the end. Did I vote down single animals? NO. Anyway
I looked at the challenge in this way...if I go to the encyclopedia for your area and want to know what animals are there, will it say felinus domesticus (I made that up)? I doubt it. My interpretation and expectations were based more toward the native animals. ie: the part in the well quoted definition---of a particular region or period.
The sad thing about this is you decided to attack me and my work. That is fine. Being an ER RN I get to be yelled, cursed at and screamed at every day. No biggy. So today is like no other.
My very first submission was for Despair, and I did not even hit 5 Taken By Surprise, why? Voters didn't think it showed despair well enough or they thought roadkill was disgusting...so what. I like the picture and got great comments.
Lastly, that has been the only challenge that I decided to be very strict on my voting. I always see something that is totally awesome and can't help giving it a high score, even if I cannot see the relation to the challenge. My voting average can attest for it. I am well above the 5 mark...wait 5.7, lets say almost 6. And that is on almost 3000 votes, and I comment on quite a few..
You wanted to know why...you have found out and I explained how I went about it, but instead you decide to curse and get very offended. Fine, that is your perogative. Show me a blue, yellow, and red cat for Primary colors and you are already over 5.
Just remember....opinions are like assholes. Everybody has one. Doesn't mean we have to like what comes out sometimes. Wipe it off and get back to work.

I just have to say, dacrazyrn, that I thought your photo was one of the rare occasions in which an attempt at a humorous title actually succeeded and I thought it was great. |

I'm curious to know how you voted on these pics that you mention.
I gave you a 5 on your "fauna" entry. It's an interesting angle on the cat, but doesn't really have anything to really grab my interest for more than a second. I'm pretty loose on challenge interpretations. If it was a living animal, they were all judged on the same plane. Personally I wasn't partial to pets or zoo animals, just ones that someone would call "meat". |

Good question! Mine only scored 5.103 and was 181 out of 315. Jochen, you scored and placed better than mine I Like Big Butts and I Cannot Lie... And mine was animalS, and are wild and indigenous (sp?) to this area (not totally wild anymore), with very good focus, lighting and color saturation. Just because it is the businees end, I score low? Well...that is not fair either!!!! I want a recount! Just kidding. heehee
So, we should not complain. You got more 8, 9, and 10's then me! You also got more 3, 2, 1's. It all evens out.
What did you score on mine?

I gave your cat picture a 6. It's a great shot for a cat, but like has been said by previous posters, I was looking for something that took a little more effort and not something you see every day.
So for the Eagle with it's back turned, I probably gave a 6 also, because although it's not as good technically as yours, the "uniqeness" makes up for it. Same with the pegon flying in front of the car... although it's a little blurry, it's unique so I think I gave that a 6 also maybe a 7 I can't remember.
I've learned that no matter how much YOU like your own shot and think it's great, the voters don't always think so. :) I've been disappointed this way also a few times. Don't worry about it, just keep snapping. :)

Out of 315 entries I really don't think you did that badly. I get a little annoyed with ppl complaining about scores above a 5 when there are so many people just wishing they could score that well. I don't think the photo ranking is exact by any means. Yours is somewhere around the middle of the bunch which is about where I'd place it. It is a sort of popularity contest for photos (you have to appeal to a wide audience), but there really isn't a conspiracy.
BTW, regardless of your opinion I don't really think it's fair or considerate to single out other people's shots in the forums. You basically made a list of shots that you think are worse than yours. I don't think it's necessary to be negative about someone else's shot.

I have a dog also, but I did not want to post that shot because I was trying to catch something more interesting. I think I gave 6 to your cat shot, I have to say you something regarding pics that you mentioned above:
ALL THESE PEOPLE WAS NOT ABLE, LIKE YOU WERE, TO PUT THEIR SUBJECT AT THE NEEDED ANGLE, OR MAYBE TO ASK EAGLE TO FLY OTHER WAY SO THEY CAN FIX THEIR EXPOSURE, OR TO ASK PIGEON TO TRY AGAIN TO FLY NEAR THE CAR SO HE CAN USE RIGHT SHUTTER SPEED. THINK A LITTLE BIT BEFORE YOU COMPLAIN!!!!!!! YOU WERE TOTALLY ABLE TO DO WITH YOUR SUBJECT WHAT EVER YOU WANT AND THAT"S THE REASON YOU SCORED LOWER!!!!!!!!! Do not look for reason why to don't do something, but rather look for the ways to do that! |

Although I have only had time top post one entry,(hopefully this will change VERY soon), I find this site one of the best on the internet for just the reason discussed here. The whole idea is to see how another person will interpret what you photograph. Each person is an artist who enter something and i believe a 1 should be only used if the there was NO thought put into the photo and it has no technical value. Although i have been limitied oi check here very often and when thinking of pictures i would submit i think of this a job. I may like the picture but it is up to the client if i have given them what they wanted |

Hey, I was one of those duck heads!!! LOL I scored better than yours. Means people liked mine better than yours. What you think is irrelevant. Bottom line: You put up an image to be voted on take what you get.
Suggestions: Next time; Increase DOF. In a tight shot like that our of focus fur is unappealing. The blue cast in the whites just doesn't work (tip of nose).
The real problem with this image is not the subject but the familiarity of it. I have seen my cat do this a million times. My duck shot was taken at an off angle and showed detail not usually seen in ducks. The underside of the bill and the actual Iris in the eye.
Originality is what killed you here, that's all. Next time don't take down others work because you are unhappy. How they voted on mine bares no weight on how they voted on yours...

You might want to get a better dictionary. Usually dictionaries with two word definitions are pretty inaccurate or incomplete.
//dictionary.reference.com/search?r=67&q=fauna (Not real exhaustive definitions, but a little more detailed than yours...) |

Maybe it's comments like:

that lead people to think your whining...
Originally posted by jochen: Only at that point I outed a complaint: why are these kinds of people tolerated here? They mess up the challenge results, don't they? |
No, they define the results. This isn't communism. People vote on whatever criteria they please. If you want to vote against B&W pictures, feel free. It all washes out when 300+ votes are counted. If your score is low because people didn't like cats as a subject for this challenge, then a lot of people felt that way. Something else to consider on how people probably interepreted pet pictures: too easy. Compared to people who had to hunt for a shot, your's could have been done in ten minutes. Now, if the challenge was "Cats" or "Pets", who cares. But when the challenge is more wide open and you opt for the easy shot, your score might, and probably will, suffer.
