Jumping off of John's Learning Series challenge suggestions....
Rule #1: Always Hold Your Camera Steady
Challenge - Deliberately move the camera while pressing the shutter button -- example:
Rule #2 - Be sure the centre of interest is in sharp focus
Challenge - Deliberately put the main focal point of your image out of focus -- example:
Rule #3 - Follow your light meter
Challenge - Deliberately over or under expose the image by 3 or more stops
What we are looking for.... happy accidents. (In the words of Freeman Patterson)

I realize learning to work within the rules is the first step. However, breaking the rules can be a lot of fun.
It's like a box of chocolates. You never know what's going to turn out.
When you're bored, experiment.

Sounds good to me. And for that matter, a "Freeman Patterson" challenge!
Colette, good work--we need to get some more of these out of the box challenges in the queue. |

Yes and no. I'd like to see a challenge where everyone is expected to think outside the box, experiment with breaking the rules that seem to be clung to with white knuckles.

That would be COOL. I am always trying to push the envelope and find ways to break the rules. |

This would be fun to try and pull off since a lot of people already thinks a little far out of the challenge description box, in this one thinking out of the challenge description box would probably end up with a perfectly setup picture vise the rule breaking one your after.

*nod*, but montages must be allowed. |

Rule #4: The rule of thirds. Always put important elements on an intersection of the lines made by dividing the image into thirds vertically and horizontally. |

Challenge: Place your main subject anywhere but on one of these intersections.

Was this a happy accident? Good colours and texture created by the camera shake. Experimentation is the key.

Oh definately. I have 30-40 different ones just like it. lol
We looked though them and found 1 that is really in focus and not wavering, but the rest are awesome anyway. Wonderful squiggly lines, and one that just has 6 perfect little circles. Have no clue what they were supposed to be.

And sometimes even done deliberately - though with dubious results

I have lots of dubious results. When I get 1 that gives me the affect I want I just want to keep going and try something different, like movement in a different direction.

I think we need this about now. Just bumping for anyone who may not have seen it the last time through.

I tried it here without much fanfare by clipping the body on the right. I'd love to see a challenge that emphasizes these types or quirks because they can make for some really strong images.
