Here are four pictures from several hundred that I shot for a musician-friend who is putting out a CD this fall. He's developing cover concepts and had two ideas he wanted me to shoot: him with guitar against a brick wall; and him in silhouette against a sunset. Critique please:

hhhmmm tought call... I would say number 1 and number 4 the ones that i like more. The colored version seems over saturated.
I don't know what type of music he playes but if it is a relaxing one i would say number 1 since it gives a more calm mood.
If it is a moody and happy music number 2. He is really well on that one, seems he was really having a blast. :)

| 2 & 4 for me. Looks like you really did a great job delivering what your client wanted. What is the proper aspect ration for a CD? Aren't they almost square? Might need to mess with the cropping. |

I don't think he's gotten that far. His music consists of covers of popular songs from the 60's and 70's mostly, Simon and Garfunkel, Beatles, etc. The CD will be used as a gift to his friends and family so distribution will be modest.
Yes, the crop for a CD cover is roughly square so these are raw and uncropped. |

i like the first photo if you use a motionless hand...and the fourth is great..but i would of course as already discussed crop to fit and zoom in a bit more on the artist

I hate to say this but the brick wall is a bit cliche'd.
This site has a funny, endless list of band photo, cliches that someone sent me only yesterday. It reads a little like Mulletsgalore.com....in spirit.

The brick wall background is a constant theme that get's poked at.
Just thought you should see this before you make any moves.

| Well, if it's for family, go with 2 for the front or the back at least as family will want to see his smiling face. Family will feel he's having fun and is happy which is what we all want for our family. Right? |

Yeah....it might make you think twice about that "brick-waller" shoot after seeing that site. Gotta admit...it's funny sh!t. I went through most of the shots and laughed for hours.

If its for his friends and family, then I think the face should be visible, so that rules out 1 and 4 for me. Songs from the 60's and 70's - I think the contemplative look with the backward look shadow does it. So that's No. 3 then. |

How about this idea: no.2 cropped to shadow and brick only?
Or maybe having the dude play his guitar for someone else and capturing something simple like his emotion or strumming.... might be interesting.
You could do it against a background that contrasts sufficiently so that you could make it look like a silhouette with post-processing, if ya decide to do that.

hmm why not put number 1 or 2 in color. i heard red is the most eye catching color when you walk down an aisle in a store. maybe black and whtie wouldn't be good for catching people's attention?

| the last one is the best i think. if you use the brick wall i think u gotta get rid of that shadow, its pretty distracting. fill flashes will help. |

They're all great shots. But they all convey a different story and a different mood. He should probably choose the one that best captures what he is trying to convey. Don't think there are any that need be discarded for photo quality or execution.

I agree...what kind of music. what kind of attitude to the musician and his music. Not knowing those details I would choose number 2.
