This is definately different. Since I had to participate in validating this, I know what it is and how it was done, but I don't think that helps add appeal at all to me. While I appreciate the effort put into this, honestly, it looks like a blurry mess. The light reflection in the upper right is a distraction, as is the tiny whiteness in the black part. Without having seen the original, I wouldn't have guessed this was an actual [deleted]. Looks kind of like a giant glob of phlegm with something stuck in the center. The centered comp doesn't really add to the photo. Seems to be lacking in dramatic angle or interesting crop at least. Overall the image just doesn't appeal to me. Sorry. ~Heather~
NOT ONE BIT OF GOOD ADVICE! SHE IS ONE OF THE SITES VALIDATORS????
PS HEATHER - IF I COULD HAVE SENT IN A PHOTO WITH A LITTLE SPOT EDITING - THE WHITE SPOTS WOULD HAVE BEEN GONE, BUT THIS IS A BASIC EDITING CONTEST!
Does anyone else get comments like this from the validators of your photos?

It's quite a long comment and must have taken quite a bit of consideration and typing. I would try to gain from it what you can, and not call someone out in the forums.

Comment told you what she saw and surely that's what we come here for. How wonderful to have got an honest comment that says exactly how the viewer felt about your image. I wish I got more like that.
For the advice repost your shot in the critique forum when the challenge is over......it's great the feedback you can get directly then.

400 comments received and 27 given in 39 challenges...and you're calling someone out in the forums for one comment you don't like/agree with?
BTW, I doubt it's cut and paste. I can type around 70 words per minute...I'm sure there are other here who can too. |

The best we can hope is truly honest comments, not some pats on the back. I totally respect Heather for this comment, and wish she would comment on some of my photos.

I guess the point of this is...
If you don't like the photo - that's fine.
But if your going to comment, make it helpful not hateful.
That is all this is about, I have read strings here the last few days about how people say hateful mean things, cut each other down ect.
And this came from a site council member?

I do not see where you are being attacked personally, and there is nothing "hateful' in Heathers comment.

Heather could have said things in a more sugar-coated way, certainly, but her comment is not without it's benefit. She mentions many areas that she feels could use improvement: clarity, composition, crop - and those are just the C's!
Some comments don't help at all, those are normally the ones that say 'Cool' or 'Interesting' or something entirely random. But most any time someone mentions aspects of your photo specifically, good information can be extracted therein, just maybe not directly. |

You should thank her for her honest and detailed comment on your photo, these types of comments are not that common. It WILL be helpful if you TRY to get something helpful out of it, because the meanings of things lie in your attitude towards them. Also, it would have been better to resolve this privately instead of starting a thread about it.

I'd kill for a nice, long honest in depth comment like that with helpful specific details.
Can't wait to see your entry, now.

Well someone had stated a while back that some people can't handle, or don't want others comments; and also said something about putting something in your preferences that says no comment needed. Some people just want to see how there photo will fair among a great deal of good photos. Sometimes I want a comment and I ask for it and I always get at least 5 honest replies. There are many people here that can help and that know what they are talking about, but others have no idea what the photographer was going for and leave a comment that does little to help. I'm not angry just adding to the thread. Really and truly I enjoy the site and the challenges and just submitting to them and trying to get a better score has made me a better photographer than when I started. Not really saying anything about Heather’s comment in which it might have been helpful, but I couldn’t find the photo it went with.

Shame on you, Shame on you, Shame on you!
Someone took the time to give an honest opinion of you photo and you call them out here!!! Look at yourself. You have received 400 comments, yet you have only given 27, and you have the nerve to complain????
And then to top it off, this comment is more helpful then any of the 27 you ever left!
Great job Heather, keep up the honest comments as that is what makes this site great.

I would be happy to receive a detail critique like the one your picture received.
It means someone has taken time to try and help you and sometimes the truth hurts. |

I think the comment from Heather was overly harsh. She could have stated her opinion more tactfully. Doing so would have made the comments more effective too.

Tiki:
Here's a comment you left in one of the current challenges:

How is the comment you received from Heather fundamentally different from this one that you left?
Bear in mind that a lot of people ask for more helpful and honest comments, and the challenge rules specifically encourage voters to comment on entries they give lower scores.
I've read Heather's comment and seen your entry. While she's certainly a bit more blunt than I would have been (that's her style), her comments directly address the photograph and certainly can't be classified as personal attacks. There is certainly nothing in the rules that say that comments most be positive or sugar-coated, only that they may not be "blatantly slanderous, rude or profane," and in my opinion Heather's comments do not cross that line.
Also please bear in mind that many voters on the site value anonymity in challenges. As such, please refrain from making any post which may reveal your entry while voting is in progress. Of course, you may post whatever you like after the voting period ends.

I count at least five useful pieces of advice. I can't understand what your complaint is at all. Are you saying it should have been worded more politely?
1, It is different, therefore might not have wide voter appeal.
2. It is out of focus - you could have improved your focus
3. It has distracting highlights- you could have improved your lighting
4. The liquid is not attratctive - might a color shift have helped it?
5. the composition is centered - would a more dynamic angle or crop have changed the image?
NOT ONE BIT OF GOOD ADVICE! |

Tiki, you got a great comment on a not-so-great shot. Unfortunately, you've given away your entry which is supposed to remain anonymous. It's clear your feelings were hurt, but I'm sure that was not the intention of the commenter. Why publicly try to embarass someone who was just trying to help you?
I think the one you up-loaded to your portfolio on April 5th, 2005 is better; however I have to agree with Heather that such a close crop detracts from the overall visual appeal.

I doubt it. Heather types about 80 words per minute.
Besides, most of the comment was specific to your photo -- not something likely to be copy/pasted.
