You nailed them! All three look really good and have a different emotional appeal, exactly what i had in mind with the assignment.

I'm not sure how well this one went - the colors just don't look natural to me in the edited versions, but maybe it's just me.

Just wanted to let everyone know that I'm headed to Chicago for a few days but I'll comment on photos when I return. Hopefully I'll get a few shots I can edit with selective color. lol

I like the composition. But, I think on both of these attempts you could go a bit more with the temperature, especially the cool one. |

Thanks for the comments. FOr whatever reason,I didn't save the file with layers but maybe I'll give it a try later when I get the chance.
I also wanted to remind people to check their comments received in their profile, because that's where I'm leaving my comments (without notifying in this thread). I noticed some haven't been marked as helpful (and they certainly don't need to be - but I thought that might be a sign that you may not have seen them yet).

Wow! I didn't even realize there was a third assignment! I'm curious, what's the difference between using Selective Color for things like shifting color tones and using Hue/Saturation? I've never really used Selective Color before (thought I will soon enough :)), so I'm curious if there's a difference.

original (not a true original, but it's what i started with today after deleting the real original a long time ago)
final
Hmm.. I thought it looked a little better on my computer.. but I guess that's how the cookie crumbles. Maybe it was more of a "it looks better than the original". Since the 'original' was my 'final' many months ago, I'd say I enjoyed doing the selective color exercise to see what I could do.
edit to add steps (good point, Laura): Levels (pulled the right-hand slider inwards), selective color: increased blacks in blacks about 4-5%, decreased magenta in yellows, increased yellow in yellows, resized, then sharpened. I believe that is all (but my mind is a bit rusty at the moment).
As for the boats under the pier, I used the photo filter and then masked the boats because the effect was causing too much of a color cast in their orange coloration.

I'm having a little trouble with this one- (can't even find a decent tutorial online!) and I was looking at the different examples but I'm hoping we could start putting the steps we took to get to the end result. I know it's a bit of work but it would help me for sure and probably help us all...
Thx Brian- it does help :0)

Updated my post (see previous) - I hope it helps.. although my examples probably aren't the most dramatic of the bunch.

I apologize to everyone for not leaving comments for a while. Will correct the situation. I assume we just comment on the final version?

Thanks Laura and Brian. I think it is a good idea to leave the steps. But, for me - I don't really pay too much attention to the steps - I think it more that you have to feel a freedom to experiment. Try different combinations. If I had to explain my steps - I have found what works best for me is to use levels to initially define my final edit and then use selective colors for emphasis. Finally, back to levels and/or curves for the final revisions. But, again the freedom comes in just using the various tools. |

Wow, now that was fun... that is the first time I have used the selective color... might have gone overboard for the first attempt, but it is a great tool!

ty very much :)
Does anybody else find it ironic that my ribbon comes from a shot with little to no color (quadtone, so I guess it technically does have color)? Perhaps it's that I need little help with actual colors - so that's why I'm in this workshop :P.
PS: Combined with your win, does that officially make us the workshop with the most ribbons (since they've started)? ;D
PPS: Actually, they're BOTH duo/quadtoned - how funny is that?

see now I didn't even know it was quadtoned! Guess I really need help :0)
But that's something I definetly want to learn too!
Repeat to self... basics first, basics first ;0) |

An image produced by taking a black-and-white picture and printing it on top of itself in four different colors of ink to produce a subtle range of tone. The principle is the same as for a DUOTONE.
Thats a definition I found online. I think it basically is a b/w image with 2/3/4 similar colors. I am probrably wrong.

I redid project 2 with selective color and got this:
is it just me, or is that way too much? i did a bit more than last time since people suggested pushing it further - but i think i may have gone too far.
