Oh yes, an affordable 2nd body can't be far away for me now.
If the 5D uses the same sensor as the 7D, ie really low noise at high ISOs, this camera will be a serious challenger to the Canon 350D and Nikon 50D. Onboard IS on a camera in this price range makes this very competitive. Can't wait to see how it performs.

It's a shame neither camera sports an eight megapixel sensor. If they'd managed that in conjunction with the anti-shake I'd say konica-minolta would have been able to put a pretty sizeable dent in Canon's market domination. |

Those 2MP really don't make a lot of difference. I've lost count of the number of reviews I've read that show that a 10D has more resolving power than a 350D, and a Nikon D70 can also show more detail than a 350D. |

You're absolutely right - in realistic practical terms they don't make that much of a difference, but in the marketing/sales arena two megapixels can change a lot of minds.

Yeah, I should carry round a large sheet of paper with explanations everytime a member of the public asks me how many megapixels my camera is. They can become dangerous conversations with prospective clients. |

The new 5D looks very promising. I suspect like Canon, it essentially has the same image processing hardware/software with a bit of decontenting to draw a new crowd in. I'm glad to see more competition. I'm also happy to see that the price is at $899. Looks like the entry level dSLR are now in the $800-$900 range, down from $1000 plus range for us in the USA. I'm glad to see that there doesn't seem to be an arms race for more MPs either. I think 6-8MP is enough for most. Plus with more MPs you need more memory and it really doesn't help unless you like really big prints or crop like crazy.
I'm also hoping that the next generation of midlevel dSLRs will follow suit and lower their price point to about $1000. Ideally in another year or so perhaps entry level dSLRs will go for about $700 and midlevel at about $900.

This might end my inner conflict regarding Nikon/Canon step into dSLR.
I looked at D7 but was out of my range.
I am looking forward to see reviews. |

The Image Stabilizer built in helps keep lens costs down.
I'm VERY happy with the 7D! I'm sure that the lighter 5D will still have the wonderful things that the 7D has!

I am so happy with their announcement. I might be able to have the money for a dSLR wirhin 2 months and this can really be the one!
And yes the image stabilization sounds great and I am sure it keeps the lens price down.

Did the KM 7D came out with any kit lens? Is the price for a kit for 5D?
Thanks! |

Again can you recommend some decent lens to start with. I would like to check the prices here in China.
AF75-300mm/F4.5-5.6 black is a little less than 200USD.
AF 24-105mm/F3.5-4.5 is 350$
AF 28mm/2.8 is 220$
But all the others are kind of expensive.

Those lenses are all good, the 24-105mm is one of Minolta's best for the price. The 75-300mm is very sharp considering it's cheap price, I've read quite a few reviews and it is arguably the best buy for a budget tele zoom. |

Still pricy.
With the body going for 900+350 the lens=1250$
The 350D in China is 900$ the kit and Nikon D70s 1050$ the kit!
I will watch closely.
Edit: on dcrsource.com it says: Priced at $899 which includes an 18 - 70 mm lens!
That's what I wanted!

Remember that the Camera has teh Image Stabilization built in...So when you are figuring out how much it cost, use the Image stabilization lens with the Nikon adn Canon bodies and you'll see that the 5D will be much cheaper in the long run

Wait .. wait.. Will this put to bed the rumors that Canon's camera will be the "5D"? Would there not be a huge stink if Canon tried to name a new camera that with KM having it first?

Especially if it shared a name with one of the cheapest DSLRs on the market. |
