You gave me an idea, I bet I could make up some prints and sell them at our Festival this year.

Its been about a year since my initial post so I figured I'd do an update and see if anyone else has been going this route and how they've been doing.
I currently have my best seller photo up for sale on eBay and it will end either today or tomorrow I believe. So far I have sold 2 of the 5 that I'm offering.
I have made some changes since my first post on this subject as some fees have changed - both in what I charge and what ebay charges - and my math may have been off initially.
I now charge a "Buy-It-Now" fee of $30.00 and I do NOT charge for shipping to US addresses. For international sales I charge a $9.00 shipping fee.
This means when all is said and done, it generally costs me $14.17 for the first print I sell and then $11.42 for each subsequent print sold (both costs are more than I'd first thought). The higher initial cost for me covers the cost of the entire listing itself. Both costs also figure in sale fees, paypal fees, printing, and shipping costs (both times) plus shipping material costs such as the envelopes I mail my prints in.
$3.75 - print & shipping to me cost per photo when buying 15 at once
$2.75 - listing fee on ebay for 5 photos sold at $30.00 each buy-it-now
$1.46 - final value fee on each sold item
$5.04 - USPS Priority cost ($4.05) + $0.99 for shipping envelope
$1.17 - Paypal fee for payments made this method
This totals the $14.17
I ran my ad about 4 times without a sale throughout the year, so that ate into my overall profits (which I haven't calculated yet). I also tried an auction style on the print and it sold for $16.00. This was much lower than I'd hoped so I won't be going the auction route again - I'd started it at $9.99.
I am selling 11x14s unmatted and unframed. I ship via USPS priority. Since I have sold 2 prints the total cost to me will be $25.59 at this point. I am selling my prints for $30.00 each so I will see an approximate profit of $34.41 from this listing.
Were I to sell all of the prints I would have an average profit of $18.00 per photo.
This is the most updated and accurate accounting of my eBay ventures so the math and everything should be correct.
As I've mentioned before, selling photos on eBay can be very hit or miss as you never know whether what you're offering is what people will want. I do know that I will not be offering my prints on eBay at the 11x14 size for less than $30.00 each regardless of how many non-sales I have, its just not worth it to me.
I am contemplating offering 8x10s at a $25.00 price but I need to order them first. It will be an interesting experiment to see whether the size difference and thus price difference influences my sales.
I will also continue to offer my photos unmatted and unframed as it is easier on me both shipping and cost-wise. I don't know how to mat and everytime I've tried to read up on it I've become horribly confused. I figure I shouldn't mess with something that works either.
Anyway, that's where things stand at this point. If anyone has questions, feel free to ask and if you've had success or failures with eBay ventures tell us about them so we can all learn from the good and bad!

That's great to hear!
It does seem like these things go in waves, very nice to know that the photography sales are starting to pick up. I'm hoping to do some more augmenting of my finances with sales here and there.
I just ordered some 8x10s to give that experiment a try. I hope it goes well!
Good luck to you on your future eBay sales. :)

Can you put up a fresh link so I can see what it looks like on ebay? |

Mine is still active for another 3 hours, so if you click the "My Prints on eBay" link in my signature it'll take you there. That said once the sale is over I'm not sure you'll be able to still view it since I won't have any active sales.
I think Lentil has the same option in her signature and some of her current auctions are active longer than mine.
Hope that helps!

You are all underselling yourselves. Sell it on Ebay with a very high buy it now as previously suggested. Please consider your time involved in taking the picture, add some time from your photography of taking some bad pics before you got that great one, etc. How many shots do you take on average before you get one that's just outstanding? Add it all up.
Then take a close look at exactly how long it takes you to put up an auction after your initial set up. When you have figured this all out devide it by the profit you think you made so you can see if you are worth .50 or .60 cents an hour.
I am not trying to piss anyone off but just trying to be realistic about it. I am an ebay powerseller and know that you have to consider your time as well to effectively determine your profit.
Also, any link to anywhere no matter what it is is against Ebays policy. It will take many auctions before they catch you but they eventually will. I even refrenced people to search google for more information about the Viette's since I was selling Viette flowers and they shut me down for that until it was removed.
